Chris Fowler

Chris Fowler was born in the Denver area and spent his childhood in Rockford, Illinois, and State College, Pennsylvania, where his father, Knox Fowler, was a theater professor at Penn State University. His family later relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Fowler graduated from General William J. Palmer High School in 1980.

He enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in radio and television news in 1985. During his college years, Fowler worked as a producer and co-host for a Boulder cable television magazine show, managed the campus radio station KAIR-AM as sports director, and covered high school athletics for the Rocky Mountain News.

Fowler has been married to Jennifer Dempster since 2006. Dempster is a former fitness instructor and model who appeared on ESPN during the 1990s as a cast member on the series BodyShaping.

Fowler joined ESPN in July 1986 as the host of Scholastic Sports America. Two years later, he transitioned to college football as a sideline reporter, conducting high-profile interviews including one with former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson. In 1990, Fowler became the host of College GameDay, anchoring the Saturday morning preview show alongside analysts such as Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit as it expanded into a traveling live broadcast.

He led College GameDay through the 2014 season before stepping down from the host role, passing hosting duties to Rece Davis. In 2014, Fowler replaced Brent Musburger as the lead play-by-play voice for ABC's Saturday Night Football, pairing with Herbstreit in the booth. In this role, Fowler became the primary voice for one of the College Football Playoff semifinal games and the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Beyond weekly game coverage, Fowler served as the emcee for ESPN's Heisman Trophy presentation starting in 1994 and hosted The Home Depot College Football Awards from 1993 to 2013. He also provided his voice as a play-by-play commentator for the video game EA Sports College Football 25.

In 2003, Fowler was named the primary host of ESPN's Grand Slam tennis coverage following the network's acquisition of broadcast rights to Wimbledon. Over time, his responsibilities expanded to calling live play-by-play matches across all four major tournaments, including the finals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

Throughout his career at ESPN, Fowler has covered a broad spectrum of athletic events. He hosted ESPN's NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four coverage from 1992 to 2005 and anchored early iterations of both the Summer and Winter X Games between 1995 and 2000. He also hosted on-site coverage of horse racing's Triple Crown events and the Breeders' Cup from 1998 to 2007.

In 2010, Fowler anchored ESPN's month-long studio programming for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa alongside Mike Tirico. He has also contributed to NFL broadcasts, calling select Monday Night Football games and calling the Super Bowl broadcast for ESPN Australia. Fowler served as the host and narrator for the historical documentary series SportsCentury on ESPN Classic, earning two Sports Emmy Awards for his work on the program.
