Danielle Collins

Collins is the daughter of Walter and Cathy Collins and has an older brother, Joel. Her father, who played recreational tennis, introduced her to the sport when she was three and coached her for years. She trained at the Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club in St. Petersburg and later at IMG Academy.

Collins is in a relationship with Bryan Kipp, whom she met in London during Wimbledon. Kipp has supported her at tournaments and away from the court.

Collins has rheumatoid arthritis, a diagnosis she disclosed in 2019. In 2021, she was also diagnosed with endometriosis and underwent surgery to remove a cyst described as tennis-ball-sized. Persistent back pain later affected her 2025 season and led her to plan a period of physical recovery.

Collins played one season for the Florida Gators before transferring to the University of Virginia. With the Virginia Cavaliers, she posted a cumulative singles record of 101-20, helped the team win consecutive ACC Championships in 2014 and 2015, and won the NCAA singles championship in 2014 and 2016.

She finished her college career as the top-ranked collegiate player and received the Honda Sports Award for tennis in 2016. Collins graduated from Virginia with a bachelor's degree in media studies and business, then returned to the University of Florida for graduate study in sports management.

Collins turned fully professional in 2016. She made her WTA main-draw debut as a wildcard at the 2014 US Open, where she pushed second seed Simona Halep to a deciding set. Her first WTA 125 title came at Newport Beach in 2018.

Collins established herself on the WTA Tour during the 2018 spring hard-court season. At Indian Wells, she recorded her first WTA Tour match win and defeated world No. 15 Madison Keys. At the Miami Open, she became the first qualifier to reach the semifinals after defeating players including Venus Williams, then ranked eighth in the world.

Her breakthrough at a Grand Slam came at the 2019 Australian Open. Collins reached the semifinals after defeating second seed Angelique Kerber in the fourth round and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals. She lost to Petra Kvitová in the semifinals and rose to world No. 23 after the tournament.

In 2020, Collins reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, defeating Garbiñe Muguruza and Ons Jabeur along the way. Her aggressive baseline game, powerful serve and flat hitting became defining features of her style.

Collins won her first two WTA Tour singles titles in 2021, taking the Palermo Ladies Open on clay and the Silicon Valley Classic on hard court. She then extended her winning streak to 12 matches before losing to Jessica Pegula in Montreal, and finished the season inside the world's top 30.

At the 2022 Australian Open, Collins reached her first Grand Slam final. She defeated Alizé Cornet in the quarterfinals and Iga Świątek in the semifinals before losing to Ashleigh Barty in the final. The result took Collins into the top 10 and made her the American No. 1 women's singles player. She later reached the Wimbledon doubles semifinals with Desirae Krawczyk and the US Open singles fourth round after defeating Naomi Osaka.

Collins won her first WTA 1000 title at the 2024 Miami Open, defeating Elena Rybakina in the final. She followed it with the Charleston Open title, beating Daria Kasatkina in the final, and became the first player to win both Miami and Charleston in consecutive weeks since Serena Williams in 2013. She also reached the Strasbourg final and returned to the top 10.

After announcing that 2024 would be her final season, Collins changed her plans in October 2024 and continued playing in 2025. Her later results included a Strasbourg semifinal, a Charleston quarterfinal and a third-round appearance at Wimbledon.
