Early life and education

Bullock was born in Arlington, Virginia, to German opera singer Helga Mathilde Meyer and American voice teacher John W. Bullock. She spent much of her childhood in Nuremberg, West Germany, and also lived briefly in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria. As a child, she performed in the children's chorus of her mother's opera productions and grew up speaking German.

She attended Washington-Lee High School, where she performed in theater productions, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama from East Carolina University. After moving to New York, she studied acting and supported herself as a bartender, cocktail waitress, and coat checker while auditioning for roles. Her younger sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, later became associated with Bullock's production company, Fortis Films.

Breakthrough with Speed and leading film roles

Bullock made her film debut in the thriller Hangmen in 1987 and received an early leading role in the short-lived television series Working Girl. She gained attention through appearances in Demolition Man and Wrestling Ernest Hemingway before her breakthrough as Annie Porter in Speed (1994), opposite Keanu Reeves. The film established her as a leading Hollywood actress.

She followed Speed with While You Were Sleeping, The Net, A Time to Kill, and Hope Floats. Her later work combined romantic comedy, drama, action, and thriller roles, including Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice, Crash, The Heat, Ocean's 8, Bird Box, The Unforgivable, and The Lost City. She also voiced Scarlet Overkill in Minions and played a mostly vocal role in Bullet Train.

For her performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side (2009), Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She received another Academy Award nomination for playing astronaut Dr. Ryan Stone in Gravity (2013), which also starred George Clooney.

She also served as an executive producer on the sitcom George Lopez, appearing on the program as Accident Amy.
