Gellar was born in New York City and is the daughter of Rosellen Greenfield and Arthur Gellar. She has Russian Jewish and Hungarian Jewish ancestry.

Early acting and All My Children

Gellar began working in entertainment at age four after being discovered by an agent while eating at a restaurant. Her first film was the made-for-television movie An Invasion of Privacy in 1983. She subsequently appeared in Over the Brooklyn Bridge, Funny Farm, Spenser: For Hire, the miniseries A Woman Named Jackie, and the Broadway productions The Widow Claire and Jake's Women.

Her early television breakthrough came with the teen soap opera Swans Crossing. She then played Kendall Hart on All My Children from 1993 to 1995 and won a Daytime Emmy Award for the role in 1995.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

In 1996, Gellar was cast in the title role of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which debuted as a television series in 1997. She played Buffy Summers, a teenager chosen to battle vampires, demons, and other supernatural forces in Sunnydale, California. The series ran for seven seasons and ended in 2003.

The show combined comedy, drama, horror, action, and teenage coming-of-age themes. Gellar performed alongside Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, Charisma Carpenter, and David Boreanaz. Buffy was supported by her friends, known as the Scooby Gang, and by her watcher, Rupert Giles. The series developed a devoted following, received 14 Emmy nominations, and influenced television through its emphasis on a strong female lead and feminist themes.
