Sean O'Malley

O'Malley grew up in Helena, Montana. Before fighting full-time, he worked with individuals with disabilities in a group home. He took up combat sports at age 16 after realizing an NFL career was unrealistic for his lean frame. He showed an aptitude for striking and competed in local bouts across the state.

He is married to Danya O'Malley. The couple had a daughter named Elena in late 2020. Their son, Matteo Montana, was born in May 2025. O'Malley has Irish ancestry through his grandmother. He co-hosts the podcast The Timbo Sugarshow alongside his longtime coach Tim Welch, and he publicly advocates for the legalization of cannabis.

O'Malley began his amateur career in Montana, compiling records of 9-2 in MMA, 4-0 in kickboxing, and 2-0 in boxing. He made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2015, winning his first five fights in Montana regional promotions. A move to North Dakota followed. He soon joined Legacy Fighting Alliance, where he delivered a spinning wheel kick knockout against David Nuzzo at LFA 11.

The stoppage earned him an invitation to Dana White's Contender Series 2 in July 2017. O'Malley faced Alfred Khashakyan in Las Vegas. He knocked Khashakyan out in the first round with a right hand. The finish earned him a UFC contract.

O'Malley made his promotional debut against Terrion Ware at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale in December 2017, winning by unanimous decision. Three months later, he defeated Andre Soukhamthath at UFC 222 despite suffering a third-round foot injury. Hip surgery and six-month suspensions tied to ostarine test failures paused his career between late 2018 and early 2020. The banned substance was determined to be residual.

He returned in March 2020 with a first-round stoppage of José Alberto Quiñónez. First-round finishes over Eddie Wineland, Thomas Almeida, and Raulian Paiva followed. At UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, O'Malley earned a split-decision victory over former champion Petr Yan.

That victory led to a title fight at UFC 292 in August 2023. O'Malley stopped reigning champion Aljamain Sterling with punches early in the second round to win the bantamweight championship. He made his first defense at UFC 299 against Marlon Vera, landing 230 significant strikes to take a unanimous decision. O'Malley lost the championship to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306, and was submitted by Dvalishvili in their June 2025 rematch at UFC 316. In 2026, he secured consecutive wins over Song Yadong and Aiemann Zahabi.

O'Malley is a switch-stance striker with a 72-inch reach. He fights tall. He operates out of both orthodox and southpaw stances, using front kicks, jabs, and feints to control distance. His offense relies on timing, shoulder feints, and angle shifts to create openings for straight counterpunches and spinning kicks.

Defensively, he relies on distance management and pull counters rather than a high guard. His upright stance leaves him dependent on lateral movement to avoid leg kicks and pressure wrestlers along the cage. While striking is his primary tool, he holds a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Augusto Mendes.
