Tony Ferguson

Ferguson has two sons with his wife, Cristina Ferguson. In March 2019, Cristina filed for a temporary restraining order in Orange County, California, describing uncharacteristic behavioral issues related to severe paranoia and sleep deprivation. She clarified that no physical abuse had taken place and sought the filing as a precautionary step to assist him in receiving mental health support. The order was withdrawn the following month without any criminal charges.

In May 2023, Ferguson was arrested in Hollywood, California, following a traffic collision where his vehicle struck two parked cars outside a nightclub and rolled over. He was charged with driving under the influence and subsequently released on a personal recognizance bond.

Ferguson was born in Oxnard, California, and grew up primarily in Muskegon, Michigan. He attended Muskegon Catholic Central High School, where he competed in football, baseball, and wrestling, winning a state wrestling championship at 152 pounds in 2002. He continued his wrestling career at Central Michigan University and Grand Valley State University, capturing the National Collegiate Wrestling Association national title at 165 pounds in 2006.

After his collegiate athletic career, Ferguson moved to California and worked in sales and bartending. A chance encounter at a bar led to an invitation to train wrestling with mixed martial artists. He made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2007, competing in California regional promotions and winning the PureCombat welterweight title before entering the UFC system.

In 2011, Ferguson competed on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos, representing Team Lesnar. He won three preliminary bouts via knockout or technical knockout before defeating Ramsey Nijem in the tournament final at the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale, earning a UFC promotional contract and a Knockout of the Night award.

Following his lone early UFC defeat to Michael Johnson in 2012, Ferguson embarked on a historic 12-fight winning streak in the lightweight division between 2013 and 2019. Known for his aggressive tempo, unorthodox striking, and mastery of the D'Arce choke, he earned high-profile submission victories over opponents such as Edson Barboza, Gleison Tibau, and Lando Vannata. On October 7, 2017, Ferguson secured the interim UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 216 by submitting Kevin Lee with a triangle choke in the third round.

His championship momentum was interrupted by multiple injuries and high-profile cancellations. Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov were famously scheduled to fight on five separate occasions, but injuries, weight-cut complications, and travel restrictions during the pandemic prevented any of the bouts from materializing. During this prime stretch, Ferguson also scored memorable stoppage victories over former champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 229 and Donald Cerrone at UFC 238.

Ferguson's winning streak ended at UFC 249 in May 2020, when he was defeated by Justin Gaethje via fifth-round technical knockout in an interim lightweight title clash. This began an eight-fight losing streak in the UFC against contenders including Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, King Green, Paddy Pimblett, and Michael Chiesa.

In January 2025, Ferguson parted ways with the UFC and signed with the Global Fight League. He subsequently crossed over into boxing, defeating Salt Papi by technical knockout in August 2025 to capture the MFB interim middleweight title, and later claimed the vacant MFB middleweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Warren Spencer in December 2025. In 2026, he also entered freestyle wrestling competition under the Real American Freestyle banner.
