Dacre Montgomery

Montgomery has been in a relationship with Australian model Liv Pollock since 2017. Pollock announced their engagement in December 2023, and she has also been involved in producing his poetry podcast, DKMH.

Montgomery's parents, Scott Montgomery and Judith Barrett-Lennard, worked in Australia's screen industry. He has a younger sister, Saskia Montgomery.

Montgomery began performing for the stage and screen at the age of nine. He spent much of his childhood on film sets because both of his parents worked in the screen industry, an experience that helped develop his interest in acting. His early credits included the short film Bertrand the Terrible and the pilot Family Tree.

He attended Mount Lawley Senior High School and studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in acting in 2015. While in Year 12, his classmates voted him the student most likely to become a Hollywood star.

Montgomery has discussed being bullied at school and experiencing anxiety from an early age. He later drew on some of those experiences when developing his performance as Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things.

Montgomery's first major film role was Jason Scott, the Red Ranger, in the 2017 superhero film Power Rangers. The same year, he appeared in the Australian comedy A Few Less Men and played Jeremy in the Christmas horror film Better Watch Out.

He joined Stranger Things in its second season as Billy Hargrove, an abusive and unpredictable teenager and the older stepbrother of Max Mayfield. Montgomery reprised the role in the third season and returned for a cameo in the fourth. For the fourth-season appearance, he filmed remotely from Australia during COVID-19 lockdowns while director Shawn Levy directed him over Zoom from the United States.

His work on the series brought critical acclaim, an MTV Movie & TV Award nomination, and two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations shared with the ensemble. Montgomery has credited Stranger Things with creating opportunities for the next stage of his career.

After Stranger Things, Montgomery took a hiatus from acting because he wanted to avoid a purely commercial career and pursue art-house films. He later starred opposite Vicky Krieps in Went Up the Hill, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, and played Richard Hall opposite Bill Skarsgård in Gus Van Sant's Dead Man's Wire.

His other film credits include Nick Danielson in The Broken Hearts Gallery and Steve Binder in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. He also worked as a producer and director on the short films In Vitro and Guilty Creatures.

In 2019, Montgomery launched DKMH, a podcast featuring his own poetry. He spent two years compiling the poetry and worked with musicians to develop the episodes. His planned directorial debut, The Engagement Party, is a film in which he is also set to star.
