Derek Carr

Carr married Heather Neel on June 29, 2012. They have three sons and a daughter. Their oldest son was born with intestinal malrotation and required three surgeries to correct the condition.

Carr's brother David Carr was also a quarterback. David played at Fresno State before becoming the first overall selection in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, while their brother Darren played Division I football as a defensive lineman at Houston. Carr has identified his Christian faith as the most important part of his life and wears tattoos referencing the Bible and the Chi Rho.

Carr enrolled early at Fresno State in 2009 and played a limited role as a freshman before redshirting the 2010 season. He became the Bulldogs' starting quarterback in 2011, passing for 3,544 yards and 26 touchdowns that season. In 2012, he led Fresno State to a 9-4 record, threw for 4,104 yards and 37 touchdowns, and won the first of his two consecutive Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year awards.

Carr's senior season in 2013 was his most productive college campaign. He led the Football Bowl Subdivision with 5,083 passing yards and 50 touchdown passes, guided Fresno State to an 11-2 record and its first outright Mountain West championship, and won the Sammy Baugh Trophy. Fresno State retired his No. 4 jersey in 2017, and he finished his college career with 12,843 passing yards and 113 touchdown passes.

The Oakland Raiders selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 36th overall pick. He became the first rookie quarterback in Raiders history to start a season opener and started all 16 games in his first season. In 2015, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl, becoming the Raiders' first Pro Bowl quarterback since Rich Gannon in 2002.

Carr helped the Raiders reach the playoffs in 2016, their first postseason appearance since 2002, and earned a second consecutive Pro Bowl selection. A fractured fibula in the final weeks of the regular season kept him out of the playoffs. He returned to the postseason with the Raiders in 2021, when he set franchise records for passing attempts, completions and passing yards and made his first career playoff start.

Carr finished his Raiders tenure as the franchise leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions. His Raiders records included 513 passing yards in a 2016 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a 91.2 percent completion rate in a 2021 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. After he was benched late in the 2022 season, the Raiders released him in February 2023.

Carr signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2023 and reunited with Dennis Allen, his former head coach with the Raiders. He started all 17 games in his first Saints season, passing for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He closed the season with a four-game winning stretch for the Saints and threw four touchdown passes against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 18.

In 2024, Carr missed time with an oblique injury and later suffered a fractured hand and concussion that ended his season after 10 games. He announced his retirement on May 10, 2025, citing longstanding pain from a labral tear and degenerative changes in his right rotator cuff. His NFL career totals were 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdown passes and 112 interceptions.

After his playing career, Carr and David Carr hosted the podcast Home Grown, which focused on football in a casual and positive format. Carr also served as a studio analyst for YouTube's coverage of an NFL International Series game in Brazil in 2025.

UCLA hired Carr as a special advisor to head coach Bob Chesney in 2026. His duties included working with Chesney and the Bruins' quarterbacks.
