Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Lynn Connelly grew up primarily in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Her parents were Ilene Carol, an antique dealer, and Gerard Connelly, a clothing manufacturer. The family also lived in Woodstock for several years before returning to Brooklyn Heights, where Connelly attended Saint Ann's School.

After graduating from high school in 1988, Connelly studied English literature at Yale University. She transferred to Stanford University after two years to study drama, training with Roy London, Howard Fine, and Harold Guskin before leaving college to return to the film industry.

Connelly began modeling at age 10 after an advertising executive friend of her father suggested an audition. Her parents sent a photograph to the Ford Modeling Agency, which added her to its roster. She worked in print advertising and television commercials and appeared on several covers of Seventeen magazine. In 1986, she also recorded the songs "Monologue of Love" and "Message of Love" for the Japanese market, singing phonetically in Japanese.

Her first film appearance was as the young Deborah Gelly in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America, released in 1984. She took a leading role in Dario Argento's Phenomena the following year and then appeared in Seven Minutes in Heaven. Her early film work continued with Jim Henson's fantasy Labyrinth in 1986, in which she played Sarah Williams opposite David Bowie. The film later became a cult classic despite its disappointing initial box-office performance.

Connelly followed Labyrinth with roles in Some Girls, Etoile, The Hot Spot, Career Opportunities, and The Rocketeer. Her performance in Dennis Hopper's The Hot Spot was praised as she made the transition from child performer to adult roles. In The Rocketeer, she played Jenny Blake alongside Billy Campbell, and she later appeared in films including Of Love and Shadows, Higher Learning, Far Harbor, and Mulholland Falls.

During the late 1990s, Connelly increasingly worked in independent and critically regarded films. She received praise for Inventing the Abbotts and gained further recognition for Alex Proyas's science-fiction noir Dark City, in which she played Emma Murdoch, a woman whose memories are altered after she is kidnapped by the Strangers.

Connelly's performance as Marion Silver in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream became one of the defining roles of her early career. To prepare for the part, she isolated herself in an apartment resembling her character's home, designed clothing, spoke with people affected by addiction, and attended Narcotics Anonymous meetings with a friend in recovery. She also appeared in Waking the Dead, Pollock, and the television series The $treet during the same period.

In Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind, Connelly portrayed Alicia Nash, the wife of mathematician John Nash, played by Russell Crowe. She met the real Alicia Nash before filming and was cast after the producers saw a clip from Requiem for a Dream. Her performance earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

She then played Betty Ross in Ang Lee's Hulk and Kathy Nicolo in House of Sand and Fog. The latter film, based on Andre Dubus III's novel, paired her with Ben Kingsley in a drama about an inherited house sold at auction and the conflict that follows.

After a two-year absence from the film scene, Connelly returned in Dark Water, playing Dahlia Williams, a mother confronting paranormal events in a New York apartment building. She later appeared in Little Children as Kathy Adamson and in Blood Diamond as journalist Maddy Bowen opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Her subsequent roles included Grace in Reservation Road, astrobiologist Helen Benson in The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Janine Gunders in He's Just Not That Into You. In Creation, she portrayed Emma Darwin opposite Paul Bettany, who played Charles Darwin. She also provided the voice of the warrior 7 in the animated film 9.

Connelly played the title character in Virginia, appeared in Ron Howard's comedy The Dilemma, and took roles in Salvation Boulevard, Stuck in Love, Winter's Tale, Aloft, and Shelter. She reunited with Russell Crowe and Darren Aronofsky for Noah in 2014, playing Naameh. Later film work included American Pastoral, Only the Brave, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Alita: Battle Angel, and Top Gun: Maverick, in which she played Penelope "Penny" Benjamin.

Her television work expanded with the science-fiction series Snowpiercer, in which she played Melanie Cavill from 2020 to 2024. She also starred as Daniela Dessen in the science-fiction series Dark Matter in 2024.

Connelly has maintained a parallel connection to fashion. She was the face of campaigns for Balenciaga and Revlon, became Shiseido's first global face in 2012, and has served as a House Ambassador for Louis Vuitton since 2015.

Connelly married actor Paul Bettany in a private family ceremony in Scotland on January 1, 2003. They met while working on A Beautiful Mind and later worked together in Creation and Shelter.

Connelly has three children. Her son Kai was born in 1997, and she has two children with Bettany, a son named Stellan and a daughter named Agnes Lark, who was born in 2011.

In 2005, Connelly was named Amnesty International Ambassador for Human Rights Education. She appeared in an advertisement highlighting the global need for clean water and supported drilling projects in Africa, India, and Central America through Charity: Water.

She participated in Revlon's annual 5K Run/Walk for Women in 2009. In 2012, she became an ambassador for Save the Children, advocating for children's rights in the United States and worldwide.
