Early struggles and education
Nunn grew up poor, and much of his childhood was spent without a permanent home. He temporarily left high school at 16, then worked to return, improve his grades, and continue his education. He credited his wife, whom he met in high school, with inspiring him to turn his life around.
After watching To Kill a Mockingbird, Nunn was inspired to pursue law. He became a two-time Indiana University graduate, earning a B.S. in Business from the School of Business in 1964 and a J.D. from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1967.
Building the Ken Nunn Law Office
After receiving his law degree, Nunn devoted more than five decades to personal-injury law in Indiana. He founded the Ken Nunn Law Office and built its reputation around representing people injured in accidents and other incidents, drawing on his own understanding of financial hardship and difficult circumstances.
The firm grew to more than 70 legal professionals located throughout Indiana. Its work included personal-injury and wrongful-death cases, and Nunn's practice received national recognition. He was also featured in four books that appeared on Amazon bestseller lists.
A commitment to giving back
Nunn remained closely connected to Indiana University and supported students seeking financial aid through the Ken Nunn Law Office Scholarship at the IU Maurer School of Law. He also supported IU athletics and had been a donor since 1976. His contributions included improvements to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, including the addition of railings intended to make the facility safer.
His philanthropy extended to the Boys & Girls Club, the Bloomington Police Department, the Red Cross, hospitals, local law-enforcement agencies, and the Bloomington Fire Department. Indiana University awarded him the Bicentennial Medal in 2019 for his support of the university and IU Athletics, and he received Presidents Circle Laurel Pin honors in 2016 and 2024.
Family and succession
Nunn's daughter, Vicky Nunn, followed him into the legal profession. After his death, she was set to lead the operations of the Ken Nunn Law Office.
Nunn was also remembered by his son and two grandchildren. In a reflection on his career, he described the satisfaction of doing a good job for his clients as the best reward of practicing law.
