Stewart has been married to screenwriter Dylan Meyer since April 20, 2025, when the couple wed in a private ceremony in Los Angeles. The two began dating in August 2019 and announced their engagement in November 2021.

Stewart publicly addressed her sexuality in 2017, stating that she was bisexual, and later described herself as a lesbian in 2026. Earlier in her career, she dated her Speak co-star Michael Angarano from 2005 to 2009, and was in a widely publicized relationship with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson from 2009 to 2013. She subsequently dated visual effects producer Alicia Cargile, French musician Soko, singer-songwriter St. Vincent, and model Stella Maxwell.

Stewart lives in Los Angeles and is an outspoken feminist. She has also spoken about living with equinophobia, which is a fear of horses.

Kristen Jaymes Stewart was born on April 9, 1990, in Los Angeles, California. Her parents both worked behind the scenes in the entertainment industry: her father, John Stewart, is a stage manager and television producer, and her mother, Jules Mann-Stewart, is an Australian-born script supervisor and director. Stewart grew up in the San Fernando Valley alongside an older brother, Cameron, and two adopted brothers, Dana and Taylor. She attended local schools until the seventh grade, after which she continued her education through distance learning and homeschooling to accommodate her acting schedule.

A talent agent discovered Stewart at age eight after seeing her perform in an elementary school Christmas play. Following a year of auditions, she made uncredited appearances in the Disney Channel television movie The Thirteenth Year (1999) and the comedy The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000). She secured her first major screen role in the independent drama The Safety of Objects (2001).

The psychological drama chronicled Diana's decision to end her marriage to Prince Charles during a Christmas gathering at the Sandringham estate. To prepare for the role, Stewart worked with a dialect coach to capture Diana's voice and studied her posture and physical mannerisms.
