Lay Lay, also known as Alaya High and That Girl Lay Lay, is an American rapper and singer from Houston, Texas. She became known for viral freestyle videos, an early record deal with Empire Records, and her Nickelodeon series That Girl Lay Lay.
Music career
Lay Lay's parents began posting videos of her rapping on YouTube. She first performed covers before writing and performing her own songs, including the debut single "Go Lay Lay Go." She became the youngest female rapper to sign a record deal with Empire Records, earning the deal at 11.
Her debut album, Tha Cheat Code, was released in 2018. She later attracted attention for a freestyle over BlocBoy JB's "Shoot" and also released a freestyle over Drake's "I'm Upset." Her performance at the 93rd Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade followed the album's release.
Nickelodeon deal and That Girl Lay Lay
In 2020, Lay Lay signed an overall deal with Nickelodeon covering original multiplatform programming, music initiatives, and a cross-category consumer products business. She had wanted her own Nickelodeon show, and the deal led to the development of That Girl Lay Lay.
She portrays Lay Lay in the Nickelodeon comedy series, which premiered in 2021. Her Nickelodeon appearances also include Group Chat with Jayden and Brent, The All-Star Nickmas Spectacular, Danger Force, Side Hustle, Tyler Perry's Young Dylan, and The Tiny Chef Show.
