Early years, schools and the car accident

Teller spent his early childhood in Pennsylvania and Delaware before his family moved to Citrus County, Florida, when he was 12. At Lecanto High School, he became president of the drama club, played baseball, and performed music on the saxophone, drums, piano and guitar. He first became interested in acting during high school and played Willard in a stage production of Footloose.

He studied at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, including method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama in 2009. In 2007, Teller was a passenger in a car that lost control and flipped eight times. The crash left him with lasting scars on his face and neck.

From *Rabbit Hole* to *Whiplash*

Teller made his feature-film debut as Jason in Rabbit Hole (2010), after Nicole Kidman selected him for the role. He followed it with Willard Hewitt in the 2011 remake of Footloose, then appeared in Project X, 21 & Over and That Awkward Moment.

His performance as Sutter Keely in The Spectacular Now (2013), opposite Shailene Woodley, earned him the Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival. In Damien Chazelle's Whiplash (2014), he played Andrew Neiman, an ambitious drummer tested by J. K. Simmons's demanding jazz instructor, Terence Fletcher. The role brought Teller critical acclaim and nominations including the BAFTA Rising Star Award.

*Top Gun: Maverick* and later work

Teller played Peter Hayes in Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016), and portrayed Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in Fantastic Four (2015). He later starred as David Packouz in War Dogs and as boxer Vinny Pazienza in Bleed for This, for which he trained extensively. His 2017 films included Only the Brave and Thank You for Your Service, in which he played veteran Adam Schumann.

On television, Teller played Detective Martin Jones in the Amazon series Too Old to Die Young and producer Albert S. Ruddy in the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer. His starring role as Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), alongside Tom Cruise, brought him a major mainstream resurgence.
