Nagarjuna

Nagarjuna was born into a prominent Telugu cinematic family as the youngest child of veteran actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Annapurna. His family originally hails from Ramapuram in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in Hyderabad, attending Hyderabad Public School and Little Flower Junior College before studying mechanical engineering at the College of Engineering, Guindy in Madras and Eastern Michigan University.

In February 1984, Nagarjuna married Lakshmi Daggubati, the daughter of film producer D. Ramanaidu and sister of actor Venkatesh and producer Suresh Babu. The couple had a son, actor Naga Chaitanya, in November 1986, before divorcing in 1990. In June 1992, Nagarjuna married actress Amala, with whom he has a son, actor Akhil Akkineni, born in April 1994. Together with his wife Amala, Nagarjuna co-founded the Blue Cross of Hyderabad, an animal welfare non-governmental organisation recognised by the Animal Welfare Board of India.

Nagarjuna entered the film world as an infant in Velugu Needalu (1961) and appeared as a child actor in Sudigundalu (1967), both of which featured his father in the lead role. He made his debut as a leading actor in the 1986 action film Vikram, a Telugu remake of the Hindi hit Hero. Early commercial successes followed with Majnu (1987), Sankeertana (1987), and the 1988 action film Aakhari Poratam, in which he starred opposite Sridevi and Suhasini.

His major career breakthrough arrived in 1989 with two defining releases. He starred in Mani Ratnam's romantic drama Geethanjali, which won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Later that year, he collaborated with debutant director Ram Gopal Varma on the collegiate action drama Siva. The film became a cultural milestone in Telugu cinema and elevated Nagarjuna to superstar status. In 1990, he made his Hindi cinema debut by reprising the role in the Bollywood remake, Shiva, which was also a major commercial success.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Nagarjuna built a reputation for exploring diverse genres, earning the moniker "Celluloid Scientist." In 1996, he produced and starred alongside Tabu in the romantic drama Ninne Pelladata, winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. The following year, he portrayed 15th-century saint and poet Annamacharya in K. Raghavendra Rao's devotional film Annamayya (1997), earning a National Film Award Special Mention, a Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Telugu, and his first Nandi Award for Best Actor.

He continued to take on historical and biographical characters, playing 17th-century composer Kancherla Gopanna in Sri Ramadasu (2006), which brought him another Nandi Award for Best Actor, and playing the title spiritual figure in Shirdi Sai (2012). Alongside devotional cinema, he headlined successful romantic comedies such as Santosham (2002) and Manmadhudu (2002), and action films like Mass (2004) and Don (2007). In 2014, he produced and starred in the multi-generational family drama Manam, and in 2016 portrayed a quadriplegic businessman in the hit drama Oopiri. His later film appearances include the Hindi fantasy film Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva (2022) and the Tamil action film Coolie (2025).

In addition to his film acting, Nagarjuna has been active in film production, media management, and entrepreneurship. He serves as co-owner of Annapurna Studios and acts as president of the Annapurna College of Film and Media in Hyderabad. In 1995, he launched an overseas production unit in Seychelles and served as a co-director of the Emmy Award-winning animation company Heart Animation.

Nagarjuna was a principal shareholder in the television network MAA TV prior to its sale to Star India. He later served as host for multiple seasons of the reality series Bigg Boss Telugu and Bigg Boss Non-Stop. In sports, he has held ownership stakes in the Indian Badminton League team Mumbai Masters and the Indian Super League club Kerala Blasters FC.
