Nick Reiner is an American screenwriter and director from Los Angeles, California. He is known for co-writing the 2015 film Being Charlie, which drew on his experiences with substance abuse, rehabilitation and homelessness, and for his professional collaboration with his father, director Rob Reiner.

Struggles with substance abuse

Nick Reiner began struggling with drug addiction as a teenager and spent years moving in and out of rehabilitation programs. He has said that he attended rehab 17 times and experienced homelessness in Maine, New Jersey and Texas, including nights and weeks spent on the street. He told People in 2016 that he could have died while homeless.

His family discussed the difficulties surrounding his treatment publicly. Rob and Michele Reiner said they sometimes followed the advice of treatment professionals even when Nick told them a program was not working, later acknowledging that they should have listened more closely to him.

Being Charlie

Reiner co-wrote the screenplay for Being Charlie, a 2015 film about an 18-year-old struggling with drug addiction and clashing with his famous father. He wrote the script with Matt Elisofon, whom he met in rehab. Although Reiner said the film was not a biography of his life, he drew on many personal experiences while developing the story.

Rob Reiner directed the film, which starred Nick Robinson as Charlie and Cary Elwes as his father. The project became an important professional collaboration between father and son. Rob described Nick as the heart and soul of the film, while Nick said that working with his father helped him understand him better and brought them closer.

Family

Nick Reiner is the son of director Rob Reiner and photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner. He grew up with siblings Jake and Romy Reiner, and Rob also adopted Tracy Reiner, his daughter from his previous marriage to filmmaker Penny Marshall.

In a 2016 interview, Nick said that he had not bonded extensively with his father during childhood. He noted that Rob liked baseball while he preferred basketball, and said that finding a shared interest in filmmaking helped them feel closer.

Charged with two counts of first-degree murder

Nick Reiner was arrested in Los Angeles after Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was held without bail. The charges included a special allegation that a dangerous and deadly weapon, identified as a knife, was used.

Reiner made his first court appearance on December 17, 2025, where he acknowledged that he understood his right to a speedy trial. Prosecutors said that a conviction could result in life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. A motive had not been alleged by prosecutors in the material covering the case.
