Remy Ma

Remy Ma has two children, a son named Jayson from a previous relationship and a daughter named Reminisce Mackenzie with rapper Papoose. She also has three stepchildren with Papoose.

She married Papoose in February 2016 after an earlier wedding plan during her incarceration was called off. They separated in late 2024, and Papoose filed for divorce in early 2025. Their daughter, Reminisce Mackenzie, was born on December 14, 2018.

Remy Ma grew up in the Castle Hill Projects in the Bronx. Because of drug abuse within her family, she took on responsibility for younger siblings at an early age and found an outlet in poetry and rap.

Her reputation as a rapper spread through the Bronx and brought her to the attention of Big Pun. After hearing her freestyle, he became her mentor. She made early appearances under the name Remy Martin on Big Pun's album Yeeeah Baby, contributing to the tracks "Ms. Martin" and "You Was Wrong."

After Big Pun's death, Fat Joe signed Remy Ma to his label arrangement with SRC and Universal and made her a member of Terror Squad. She appeared on the group's album True Story, whose single "Lean Back" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and earned her a Grammy nomination.

Remy Ma released her debut solo album, There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story, on February 7, 2006. The album included the singles "Whuteva," "Conceited" and "Feels So Good." Creative differences over promotion contributed to her departure from Fat Joe's Terror Squad and her separation from Universal.

In 2007, Remy Ma was arrested in connection with the shooting of Makeda Barnes-Joseph in Manhattan. In March 2008, she was convicted of assault, illegal weapon possession and attempted coercion, while she was acquitted of witness tampering and gang assault. She received an eight-year prison sentence and served six years at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women.

While incarcerated, she released the mixtapes The BX Files, Shesus Khryst and Blasremy. She was released on August 1, 2014, then returned to recording with the mixtape I'm Around later that year and Remy on the Rocks in 2015.

From 2015 to 2020, Remy Ma was a main cast member on VH1's Love & Hip Hop: New York, appearing alongside Papoose. She also starred in the spin-off Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies and hosted State of the Culture with Joe Budden from 2018 to 2020.

She reunited professionally with Fat Joe for the 2017 joint album Plata O Plomo. Its lead single, "All the Way Up," received platinum certification and two Grammy nominations. Her acting credits include the film 6:45, in which she played Cassi, and the television series Queens, where she played Zadie, also known as Lady Z.

In February 2022, Remy Ma launched Chrome 23, a battle rap league created to provide women with greater exposure and opportunity in a male-dominated part of hip-hop. Its first event, "Queens Get the Money," was streamed on the Hot 97 YouTube channel.

Later in 2022, Chrome 23 staged its first all-women battle rap tournament. The league marked its first anniversary in 2023 with a co-ed event headlined by Hitman Holla and Eazy the Block Captain. Their battle became the highest-viewed battle of 2023 on YouTube, reaching one million views in four days and three million views in nine months.

Remy Ma won the BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist in 2005 and 2017. She has also received two Vibe Awards, two Source Awards and an ASCAP pop award.

She was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame in 2022. Her Grammy nominations include recognition for "Lean Back," "All the Way Up" and her featured appearance on the Good Morning Gorgeous deluxe album.
