Skip Bayless

Bayless was born John Edward Bayless II in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His father nicknamed him Skip shortly after birth, a moniker derived from how his father addressed his mother as the "skipper of the ship." The nickname remained throughout his upbringing, and Bayless eventually changed his name legally to Skip. His parents operated the Hickory House barbecue restaurant in Oklahoma City, where he worked during his youth. His younger brother, Rick Bayless, pursued the culinary industry and became a chef, restaurateur, and television personality.

Bayless has been married to Ernestine Sclafani since July 28, 2016.

Bayless began his journalism career at The Miami Herald writing sports features after graduating cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1974 on the Grantland Rice Scholarship. In August 1976, he joined the Los Angeles Times, where he covered prominent investigative stories and earned the 1977 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Newspaper Writing for his reporting on Seattle Slew's Triple Crown victory.

At age 26, Bayless became the lead sports columnist for The Dallas Morning News before later moving to the Dallas Times Herald. During his time in Texas, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association voted him Texas Sportswriter of the Year three times (1979, 1984, and 1986). In 1998, he moved to the Chicago Tribune as its lead sports columnist, earning the Lisagor Award in 1999 and Illinois Sportswriter of the Year honors in 2000 before leaving the publication in July 2001.

Bayless authored three non-fiction books focused on the Dallas Cowboys: God's Coach: The Hymns, Hype, and Hypocrisy of Tom Landry's Cowboys (1990), The Boys: The Untold Story of the Dallas Cowboys' Season on the Edge (1993), and Hell-Bent: The Crazy Truth About the "Win or Else" Dallas Cowboys (1996).

Bayless expanded into broadcast media during the 1990s. He hosted radio programs in Dallas on KLIF and became an original investor and host at Fort Worth station KTCK ("The Ticket") in 1994. He also made recurring appearances on television, joining Dick Schaap as a regular panelist on ESPN's The Sports Reporters starting in 1989 and participating on Fox Sports Net programs such as The Last Word.

In 2004, ESPN hired Bayless full-time to partner with Woody Paige on daily "1st and 10" debate segments on ESPN2's Cold Pizza. The program was rebranded as First Take in 2007, where Bayless subsequently engaged in daily sports debates alongside Stephen A. Smith. Bayless departed ESPN in June 2016.

In September 2016, Bayless launched the Fox Sports 1 daily debate program Skip and Shannon: Undisputed alongside former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe departed the show in 2023, after which Bayless re-launched the program with a rotating panel including Michael Irvin, Richard Sherman, and Keyshawn Johnson. Bayless concluded his run on Undisputed and departed Fox Sports 1 on August 2, 2024.
