Valerie Bertinelli

Bertinelli was married to rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen from 1981 until their divorce was finalized in 2007. They had one son, Wolfgang Van Halen, born in 1991. Bertinelli experienced a miscarriage in 1986. She remained amicable with Van Halen after their divorce and was at his bedside when he died in 2020.

Bertinelli began a relationship with financial planner Tom Vitale in 2004 and married him in Malibu on January 1, 2011. They separated in 2021, and their divorce was finalized on November 22, 2022. Through her marriage to Vitale, she had four stepchildren.

Bertinelli studied acting at the Tami Lynn School of Artists after her family moved to California. She made her screen debut as Peggy in a 1974 episode of Apple's Way and appeared in a J.C. Penney commercial at age 12.

Producer Norman Lear cast Bertinelli as Barbara Cooper in the CBS sitcom One Day at a Time, which premiered in 1975. She was 15 when the series began and appeared in 208 of its 209 episodes through 1984. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress.

During and after the sitcom's run, Bertinelli appeared in television films and feature films including C.H.O.M.P.S., Ordinary Heroes, and Number One with a Bullet. She also starred in the 1987 miniseries I'll Take Manhattan and led the short-lived sitcoms Sydney and Café Americain.

Bertinelli joined Touched by an Angel as Gloria for its final two seasons, appearing in 59 episodes from 2001 to 2003. In 2010, she began playing Melanie Moretti on Hot in Cleveland, alongside Betty White, Wendie Malick, and Jane Leeves. The sitcom ran for six seasons and concluded in 2015.

Her other television credits include The Seduction of Gina, I'll Take Manhattan, Boston Legal, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, and the unaired NBC pilot Hungry, in which she played Lisa opposite Demi Lovato. In 2024, she joined The Drew Barrymore Show as a member of the Drew Crew and a special correspondent.

Bertinelli began hosting Food Network programs in 2015, including Valerie's Home Cooking and Kids Baking Championship, which she co-hosted with Duff Goldman. She won two Daytime Emmy Awards for Valerie's Home Cooking, including Outstanding Culinary Program and Outstanding Culinary Host. She also hosted Family Food Showdown and Family Restaurant Rivals in 2019.

Bertinelli became a Jenny Craig spokesperson in 2009 and wrote about her experience in the memoir Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time. Her other books include Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge, One Dish at a Time, Valerie's Home Cooking, and Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.

In April 2010, she completed the Boston Marathon in 5:14:37 to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She received the 2,476th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August 2012.
