Noah Olivier Smith was born in Irvine, California, and spent part of his childhood in Fullerton before moving with his family to Portland, Oregon. He attended Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego and later briefly moved to New York City before returning to the Greater Los Angeles area to pursue music.

His mother is Romanian, while his father is American with Mexican and British ancestry. His father, Joshua Smith, is also a musician who makes music under the name Beast Clouds. Yeat has two younger brothers, Luca and Ethan.

Yeat began making music in 2015 under the name Lil Yeat. He first appeared publicly under the name Yeat on June 30, 2018, when he premiered the track "Brink" on the YouTube channel Elevator. He released his first mixtape, Deep Blue Strips, in September 2018 and premiered the music video for "Stay Up" in February 2019.

His early music developed through singles, mixtapes, and EPs released online. In 2021, the mixtape 4L and the EP Trendi brought wider attention to songs including "Sorry Bout That," "Money Twerk," "Mad Bout That," and "Fukit." He released his debut studio album, Up 2 Me, in September 2021 after signing with Interscope Records.

Yeat's rise accelerated through TikTok and other social media platforms. A snippet of "Gët Busy" became viral in August 2021, and the song gained attention for the line, "this song already was turnt but here's a bell," followed by ringing church bells. Drake and Lil Yachty referenced the line, helping increase the song's visibility.

Up 2 Me entered the Billboard 200 in January 2022 and ultimately peaked at number 58. Yeat released 2 Alive in February 2022, and the album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200. Its deluxe edition, 2 Alive (Geek Pack), followed in April, while his song "U Could Tell" appeared in an episode of Euphoria.

Yeat released the EP Lyfe in September 2022, with the project debuting at number ten on the Billboard 200. His third studio album, Afterlyfe, followed in February 2023 and reached number four on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Billboard Rap Albums chart. The album included a feature from YoungBoy Never Broke Again and appearances by Yeat's alter egos Kranky Kranky and Luh Geeky.

In 2023, Yeat appeared on Drake's "IDGAF" from For All the Dogs. The song debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on the Global 200, giving Yeat his first top-ten entry on the Hot 100. He released 2093 in February 2024, followed by Lyfestyle in October. 2093 debuted at number two, while Lyfestyle became his first project to debut at number one on the Billboard 200.

Yeat's music combines experimental hip-hop, trap, rage, and cloud rap. He uses Auto-Tune-infused vocals and, beginning in 2021, developed a more aggressive, synth-based sound associated with rage beats. He has cited Future, Young Thug, and T-Pain as major influences, and his vocal preset is based on a vocal chain provided by Weiland.

His songs are also recognized for a distinctive vocabulary that includes terms and ad-libs such as "twizzy," "krank," and "luh geeky." He frequently refers to luxury SUVs as "Tonka trucks" or "Tonkas." The recurring bells in songs such as "Gët Busy" have connected his music with Internet memes and social media trends.

Yeat was in a relationship with Instagram star Symone Ryley until December 2024.

His family background has also been connected to his music. His father influenced Yeat's use of invented words, having created unusual words himself during Yeat's childhood.
