Adrienne Elrod is an American journalist, politician, and Democratic political strategist. She is known for senior communications and surrogate-strategy roles on presidential campaigns for Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris, as well as for her work in the Biden administration. She is also the president of Elrod Strategies and a contributor to NBC News and MSNBC.

Clinton Administration and Arkansas Democratic Party

Elrod began her political career in President Bill Clinton's administration, working in the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She later returned to Arkansas to serve as communications director for the Arkansas Democratic Party.

Her interest in politics was shaped in part by her family connections in Arkansas. Her father, John R. Elrod, was a longtime friend of Bill Clinton, while her mother, Georgia Harris Elrod, practiced law alongside Hillary Clinton when female attorneys were still uncommon in the state. Elrod has described Bill and Hillary Clinton as influential figures in her life from a young age.

Congressional Career and Presidential Campaigns

Elrod held senior roles on Capitol Hill, including deputy chief of staff to Representative Ron Klein and nearly six years as chief of staff to Representative Loretta Sanchez. She also served as a regional press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and worked on Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign in regional press, Texas communications, and delegate-selection roles.

In Hillary for America's 2016 campaign, Elrod was director of strategic communications and surrogates. She oversaw the campaign's surrogate operation, coordinating appearances and messaging involving elected officials, civic leaders, celebrities, and other prominent supporters.

Elrod later served as director of surrogate strategy and operations for Joe Biden's 2020 general-election campaign. After Biden's election, she became director of external affairs and talent for the Biden Inaugural Committee and helped organize the televised special Celebrating America: An Inauguration Night Special.

She was senior advisor and senior spokesperson for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, after holding the same positions for Biden's reelection campaign. In those roles, she appeared on television for the campaign and participated in its leadership and communications operations.

Elrod Strategies and Media Career

Elrod founded Elrod Strategies, a strategic communications firm, and serves as its president. The company works with corporate, political, and nonprofit clients on brand development, media relations, influencer engagement, and communications in Washington.

She is a political contributor to NBC News and MSNBC and has also provided analysis on CNN, Fox News, and Fox Business. Her first appearance on NBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews came in January 2019. Elrod has also co-hosted The Electables podcast with Doug Thornell, which focuses on political campaigns, strategy, and current events.

CHIPS Program Office and Political Analysis

From 2022 to 2024, Elrod served as director of external and government affairs for the CHIPS Program Office at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Working as a senior aide to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, she managed legislative affairs and communications for the administration's semiconductor-manufacturing initiative.

Her public speaking and commentary draw on experience across four presidential campaigns and nearly three decades in government, campaign, and private-sector work. Her presentations have focused on presidential campaign strategy, changes in the Democratic coalition, semiconductor and artificial-intelligence investment, and the translation of complex policy into public-facing narratives.
