Chris Pine is an American actor known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot film series. He is also recognized for portraying Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, as well as for roles in Hell or High Water, Into the Woods, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Personal life

Pine was in a relationship with South African model Dominique Piek from late 2011 to early 2013. He was in a relationship with British actress Annabelle Wallis from 2018 to early 2022. He has been in a relationship with designer Keana Sky Wenger since 2023.

In 2014, while filming Z for Zachariah in New Zealand, Pine pleaded guilty to a drunk-driving charge after failing a roadside breath test. He was disqualified from driving in New Zealand for six months and ordered to pay reparation.

Early life and education

Chris Pine grew up in Los Angeles in a family connected to the entertainment industry. His father, Robert Pine, played Sergeant Joseph Getraer on CHiPs, while his mother, Gwynne Gilford, was an actress before becoming a therapist. His maternal grandmother, Anne Gwynne, was a Hollywood actress, and his sister Katherine Pine has also acted.

Pine attended Oakwood School and studied English at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 2002. During college, he performed in local theater productions, including works by Caryl Churchill and William Shakespeare. He also spent a year as an exchange student at the University of Leeds in England and later worked as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

From television roles to Star Trek

Pine began his professional screen career with guest appearances on ER, The Guardian, and CSI: Miami in 2003. His first feature film was The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), in which he played Nicholas Devereaux, the love interest of Anne Hathaway's character. He followed it with the romantic comedy Just My Luck, the crime thriller Smokin' Aces, and the independent film Bottle Shock.

In 2007, Pine chose to play James T. Kirk in J. J. Abrams's Star Trek reboot rather than appear in a film adaptation of White Jazz. Released in 2009, Star Trek became a critical and commercial success and made Pine internationally known. He returned as Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).

Pine also continued working in theater and television during this period. He appeared in the plays The Atheist, Fat Pig, Farragut North, and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. His performance in The Lieutenant of Inishmore earned him the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle's lead appearance award.

Jack Ryan and superhero movies

Following the success of Star Trek, Pine took on action, comedy, drama, and voice roles. He starred opposite Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's Unstoppable (2010), appeared with Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy in This Means War (2012), and voiced Jack Frost in Rise of the Guardians (2012). He played the title character in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), becoming the fourth actor to portray Tom Clancy's CIA analyst in a feature film.

Pine played Cinderella's Prince in the musical Into the Woods (2014), Toby Howard in Hell or High Water (2016), and Robert the Bruce in Outlaw King (2018). He also voiced Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and appeared in A Wrinkle in Time.

In Wonder Woman (2017), Pine played Steve Trevor opposite Gal Gadot. He reprised the role in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020). His later credits include the miniseries I Am the Night, in which he played journalist Jay Singletary, as well as The Contractor, All the Old Knives, Don't Worry Darling, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Directorial debut with Poolman

Pine made his directorial debut with the noir comedy Poolman (2023), in which he also starred, cowrote, and served as a producer. He played Darren Barrenman, a pool cleaner who becomes an amateur detective while investigating a mystery.

He also voiced King Magnifico in the animated film Wish (2023). In The Kidnapping of Arabella, he performed his first Italian-language role, and he was attached to projects including Carousel, Alpha Gang, The Catch, and Yeti.
