Dick Van Dyke

Richard Wayne Van Dyke grew up in Danville, Illinois, after being born in West Plains, Missouri. He participated in his high school choir and drama club, where classmates included entertainers Donald O'Connor and Bobby Short. His involvement in school performances helped turn his early interest in the ministry toward a career in show business.

During World War II, Van Dyke served in the United States Army Air Forces. He first trained for pilot service before transferring to Special Services, where he built and painted sets, performed for military personnel, and worked as a radio announcer. After leaving the service, he returned to radio and entertainment work, and received his high school diploma in 2004.

Van Dyke worked as a radio DJ in Danville before meeting Phil Erickson in 1947. Together they formed the comedy duo Eric and Van, later known as The Merry Mutes, performing mime and lip-synching acts on the nightclub circuit. The pair worked in California and Atlanta, appeared on national television, and developed The Merry Mutes Show for Atlanta television.

Van Dyke moved through radio, local television, game shows, and variety programs before making his Broadway debut in The Girls Against the Boys in 1959. The production closed after 16 performances, but he soon took the leading role of Albert Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie. His performance earned him the 1961 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

From 1961 to 1966, Van Dyke starred as television comedy writer Rob Petrie in the CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show. Carl Reiner created the program and selected Van Dyke to replace him as the lead after CBS requested a recasting. Mary Tyler Moore played Rob's wife, Laura Petrie, while Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam portrayed his friends and co-workers.

The series combined workplace and domestic comedy and established Van Dyke as a major television star. He won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and the program won four Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series. A 2004 reunion special, The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited, brought Van Dyke together with surviving members of the original cast.

Van Dyke made his film debut in the 1963 adaptation of Bye Bye Birdie. He followed it with two of his most enduring screen roles in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, playing the cheerful chimney sweep Bert and the elderly bank chairman Mr. Dawes Senior. He also appeared with Julie Andrews on the film's soundtrack, which earned him a Grammy Award.

In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Van Dyke played inventor Caractacus Potts and performed with his own American accent despite the film's English setting. He later took a darker role as crooked district attorney Fletcher in Dick Tracy (1990). His other film appearances included The Comic, Curious George, Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and Mary Poppins Returns, in which he played Mr. Dawes Jr.

Van Dyke's performance as D.A. Fletcher in Dick Tracy helped lead to his casting as Dr. Mark Sloan, first in an episode of Jake and the Fatman and then in television films. Those films became the basis for the CBS crime drama Diagnosis: Murder, which premiered in 1993 and ran through 2001.

Van Dyke's son Barry Van Dyke co-starred as Lieutenant Detective Steve Sloan, Dr. Sloan's son. Victoria Rowell played pathologist Dr. Amanda Bentley, and Charlie Schlatter portrayed Dr. Jesse Travis. Van Dyke also served as an executive producer on the series and created 3D-rendered effects for an episode using computer animation.

After Diagnosis: Murder, Van Dyke continued to work in television, film, and theater. He appeared with Mary Tyler Moore in the television production of The Gin Game in 2003, played Dr. Jonathan Maxwell in the Murder 101 mystery films beginning in 2006, and appeared in Night at the Museum and its later installments. He also returned to the stage in the musical memoir Dick Van Dyke: A Step in Time, which debuted at Los Angeles's Geffen Playhouse in 2010.

His later television appearances included The Middle, Kidding, Days of Our Lives, and The Simpsons. In 2023, he competed as Gnome on The Masked Singer and became the oldest contestant in the show's history at age 97. In 2024, he won a Daytime Emmy for his performance on Days of Our Lives, becoming the oldest person to be nominated for and win a Daytime Emmy at that time.

Van Dyke was married to Margie Willett from 1948 until their divorce in 1984, following a long separation. They had four children, Christian, Barry, Stacy, and Carrie Beth. He was also in a long-term relationship with Michelle Triola Marvin from 1976 until her death in 2009.

Van Dyke married makeup artist Arlene Silver on February 29, 2012. Silver appeared with him at public events and co-produced the 2024 music video for Coldplay's song “All My Love.” Van Dyke's family has also been connected to his television work, with Barry Van Dyke and other relatives appearing in episodes of Diagnosis: Murder.

Van Dyke has received six Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Tony Award. He received the Tony for Bye Bye Birdie in 1961 and won three Primetime Emmys for The Dick Van Dyke Show. His variety program Van Dyke and Company also won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy-Variety Series.

He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993, was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995, and became a Disney Legend in 1998. His later honors include the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2013 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2021. He also wrote several books, including the memoir My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business and Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging.
