Drew Carey

Carey proposed to Nicole Jaracz in 2007, but they called off their engagement in 2012. In January 2018, he became engaged to sex therapist Amie Harwick; they ended the engagement that November but remained close.

Carey has spoken publicly about depression and suicide attempts in his autobiography. He underwent a coronary angioplasty after experiencing chest pains while filming The Drew Carey Show in 2001, and later adopted a diet and exercise plan that he said helped resolve his type 2 diabetes.

After leaving Kent State University, Carey enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980. He served for six years as a field radio operator with the 25th Marine Regiment in Ohio. His military service influenced his signature crew cut and glasses.

Carey began pursuing comedy in 1985 after his friend David Lawrence encouraged him to study joke writing. In 1986, he won an open-mic competition and became master of ceremonies at the Cleveland Comedy Club. His first national television exposure came through Star Search in 1988, followed by an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1991. His 1994 special, Drew Carey: Human Cartoon, won a CableACE Award for Best Writing.

Carey and television writer Bruce Helford developed The Drew Carey Show, an ABC sitcom centered on a fictionalized version of Carey and his friends in Cleveland. The series premiered in 1995, ran for nine years, and produced 233 episodes. Carey starred in the title role and also served as a co-creator, producer, executive producer, and writer.

In 1998, Carey began hosting the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? He introduced the performers, directed the games, and frequently joined the cast. The program featured performers including Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, and Wayne Brady. Carey and several performers from the series later toured as the Improv All-Stars.

Carey expanded the format with Drew Carey's Green Screen Show, which ran from 2004 to 2005, and Drew Carey's Improv-A-Ganza, filmed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and first broadcast in 2011.

Carey began hosting CBS's Power of 10 in 2007. After Bob Barker announced his retirement from The Price Is Right, CBS approached Carey about taking over the long-running game show. Carey initially turned down the offer before accepting the position later that year.

His first episode of The Price Is Right was taped in August 2007, and his episodes began airing in October. He continued Barker's tradition of promoting the spaying and neutering of pets at the end of each episode. Carey also hosted a special honoring Barker's life and career after Barker's death.

Carey is a minority owner of Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC. He has supported the United States men's national soccer team, attended World Cup matches, and photographed soccer games from the sidelines. His photographs have been distributed under the pseudonym Brooks Parkenridge. The Sounders won MLS Cups in 2016 and 2019 during his ownership.

Carey published the autobiography Dirty Jokes and Beer: Stories of the Unrefined in 1997, and the book appeared on The New York Times bestseller list. He has also acted in films including Coneheads, Robots, and Jack and Jill, appeared in the Disney television film Geppetto, and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011 after entering the 2001 Royal Rumble.
