Lee Trevino

Lee Trevino was raised by his mother, Juanita Trevino, and his grandfather, Joe Trevino. His father, Joseph Trevino, left when he was young, and Trevino began working in the cotton fields at age five to help support his family. He left school at 14 and worked as a caddie and shoe shiner at the Dallas Athletic Club.

Trevino was married to Claudia Fenley, from whom he divorced, and has been married to Claudia Bove since 1983. He has six children, including two with Claudia Bove and four from previous marriages.

Trevino learned golf while caddying and practicing at Texas country clubs. Working from bare, hard ground and in windy conditions helped shape the compact swing and controlled fade that became hallmarks of his game. After leaving the United States Marine Corps in 1960, he worked as a club professional in El Paso and joined the PGA Tour in 1967.

He finished fifth in the 1967 U.S. Open, earning Tour privileges for the rest of the season. In 1968, he won the U.S. Open at Oak Hill Country Club by four strokes over Jack Nicklaus. Trevino won 29 PGA Tour events during his career and became one of Nicklaus's leading rivals in the early 1970s.

Trevino's most celebrated season came in 1971, when he won the U.S. Open, the Canadian Open and The Open Championship within a 20-day span. He defeated Jack Nicklaus in an 18-hole playoff at the U.S. Open, then won the Canadian Open and British Open in successive weeks. The achievement made him the first player to win those three national opens in a single year. He received the Hickok Belt, Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year honor and the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year award for 1971.

He successfully defended The Open Championship at Muirfield in 1972, winning by one stroke over Nicklaus. Trevino later won the PGA Championship in 1974 and again in 1984. His six major victories were two U.S. Opens, two Open Championships and two PGA Championships. The Masters was the only major championship he did not win.

Trevino also won the 1980 Players Championship and captured 29 senior-tour victories, including four senior major championships. He won the U.S. Senior Open in 1990, The Tradition in 1992 and the PGA Seniors' Championship in 1992 and 1994.

Trevino was struck by lightning during the 1975 Western Open and suffered injuries to his spine. He later underwent surgery to remove a damaged spinal disc and had another back operation in 1982. Despite chronic back problems, he won the PGA Championship in 1984 and the Dunhill British Masters in 1985.

From 1983 to 1989, Trevino worked as a color analyst for NBC's PGA Tour coverage. He also served as the United States Ryder Cup team's non-playing captain in 1985 after playing on six Ryder Cup teams between 1969 and 1981.

Trevino made a cameo appearance in the comedy film Happy Gilmore, where he repeatedly reacts to the title character's outbursts. His only spoken line is, "Grizzly Adams did have a beard." He later expressed regret about appearing in the film because of its profanity.
