Katie Holmes

Holmes was married to actor Tom Cruise from 2006 to 2012. They have one daughter, Suri, who was born in April 2006. The couple married in a Scientologist ceremony at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, in November 2006.

Before her marriage to Cruise, Holmes dated her Dawson's Creek co-star Joshua Jackson, whom she later called her first love. She became engaged to actor Chris Klein in 2003 after three years together, but they ended their relationship in 2005.

Holmes began modeling classes in Toledo at age 14 and attended the International Modeling and Talent Association competition in New York in 1996. After performing a monologue from To Kill a Mockingbird, she attracted representation and was cast as Libbets Casey in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997), her first film role.

Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Joey Potter in Kevin Williamson's teen drama Dawson's Creek. Holmes auditioned by videotape while performing as Lola in her high-school production of Damn Yankees, and she ultimately appeared in all 128 episodes from 1998 to 2003. The role brought her national attention and magazine covers, while her performance in Disturbing Behavior earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.

During and after Dawson's Creek, Holmes appeared in films including Go, Wonder Boys, The Gift, Abandon, Phone Booth, and The Singing Detective. Her performance as April Burns in Pieces of April (2003) received strong critical attention and earned her a Satellite Award for Best Actress.

Holmes played Samantha Mackenzie in First Daughter and Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins (2005). Her later film work included Mad Money, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, The Giver, Woman in Gold, Touched with Fire, Logan Lucky, Coda, Brahms: The Boy II, and The Secret: Dare to Dream.

In television, Holmes portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy in the miniseries The Kennedys (2011) and reprised the role in The Kennedys: After Camelot (2017). She also played Paige Finney in the third season of Ray Donovan and appeared as Naomi, known as the Slutty Pumpkin, on How I Met Your Mother.

Holmes made her Broadway debut as Ann Deever in the 2008 revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. She later appeared in the Broadway production Dead Accounts, the Off-Broadway play The Wanderers, and the 2024 Broadway revival of Our Town, in which she played Mrs. Webb.

Holmes directed the short documentary Eternal Princess, about Olympic gymnast Nadia Comăneci, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. She made her feature directorial debut with All We Had (2016), in which she also starred as a single mother named Rita.

She wrote, directed, and starred in Alone Together (2022), which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and directed and acted in Rare Objects (2023). Holmes also co-founded the clothing line Holmes & Yang with stylist Jeanne Yang and helped launch the Dizzy Feet Foundation with Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman, and Carrie Ann Inaba.
