Kyle Shanahan

Shanahan has been married to Mandy O'Donnell since 2005. They met while attending Cherry Creek High School and have three children, Stella, Carter, and Lexi.

Shanahan is the son of Mike Shanahan, who coached the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins and also served as the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator. Kyle joined his father's Washington staff in 2010 as offensive coordinator.

After graduating from the University of Texas in 2003, Shanahan began coaching as a graduate assistant at UCLA. He moved to the NFL in 2004 as an offensive quality control coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he broke down game film and helped prepare play diagrams under Jon Gruden.

Shanahan joined the Houston Texans in 2006 as wide receivers coach, moved to quarterbacks coach in 2007, and became offensive coordinator in 2008. At age 28, he was the youngest offensive coordinator in NFL history at that time. The Texans led the NFL in passing yards in 2009, when quarterback Matt Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson produced career-best seasons.

He became Washington's offensive coordinator in 2010 and worked alongside his father, Mike Shanahan. His offense helped Washington win the NFC East in 2012, with quarterback Robert Griffin III winning the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and running back Alfred Morris rushing for a franchise-record 1,613 yards. Kyle Shanahan later served as Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator in 2014.

The Atlanta Falcons hired Shanahan as offensive coordinator in 2015. After an 8-8 first season, his offense became the NFL's highest-scoring unit in 2016. The Falcons finished 11-5, won the NFC South, and advanced to Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots.

Shanahan helped quarterback Matt Ryan win the NFL Most Valuable Player Award while directing an Atlanta offense that scored 540 points. He received the Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year Award, the Sporting News Coordinator of the Year Award, and the Pro Football Writers of America Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Atlanta led New England 28-3 in the third quarter of Super Bowl LI before losing 34-28 in overtime. Shanahan's late-game play-calling was criticized after the Falcons failed to protect their lead, but his two seasons under head coach Dan Quinn also placed him alongside future head coaches Matt LaFleur and Mike McDaniel on Atlanta's staff.

The 49ers hired Shanahan as their head coach on February 6, 2017. San Francisco began his first season 0-9, then won six of its final seven games to finish 6-10. The team went 4-12 in 2018 before making a major turnaround in 2019, posting a 13-3 record, winning the NFC West, and reaching Super Bowl LIV.

The 49ers lost Super Bowl LIV to the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-20, but Shanahan won the Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year Award. San Francisco returned to the NFC Championship Game in 2021 and 2022, and the 2022 team reached that stage after quarterback Brock Purdy emerged as the starter during the season.

In 2023, Shanahan led the 49ers to a 12-5 record, a second consecutive NFC West title, and another NFC Championship Game victory before the team faced Kansas City in Super Bowl LVIII. The Chiefs won 25-22 in overtime. Under Shanahan, the 49ers have also developed a strong coaching network that has included assistants such as Robert Saleh, Mike McDaniel, DeMeco Ryans, and Jeff Hafley, all of whom later became head coaches.
