Sean McVay

McVay married Veronika Khomyn, a Ukrainian model and realtor, in 2022. They met while McVay was coaching in Washington and Khomyn was studying at George Mason University. They became engaged in Cannes, France, in 2019.

The couple have two sons, Jordan John McVay, born in October 2023, and Christian Alexander McVay, born in December 2025.

McVay was born in Dayton, Ohio, and grew up in the Atlanta area. His father, Tim McVay, played defensive back at Indiana University, while his paternal grandfather, John McVay, was a football coach and later an executive with the San Francisco 49ers. John McVay was part of five Super Bowl championship teams during his tenure with San Francisco.

At Marist School in Brookhaven, Georgia, McVay played quarterback and safety. He led the War Eagles to a state championship and was named Georgia's Player of the Year. He attended Miami University in Ohio, where he switched to wide receiver and recorded 39 receptions for 312 yards from 2005 to 2007. He graduated in 2008 with a degree in health and sports studies.

McVay began coaching with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an assistant wide receivers coach under Jon Gruden in 2008. He spent 2009 with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League before joining the Washington Redskins in 2010 as an assistant tight ends coach. He became the team's tight ends coach in 2011 and was promoted to offensive coordinator under Jay Gruden in 2014.

In Washington, McVay worked closely with tight ends including Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen, and Jordan Reed. He also helped develop quarterback Kirk Cousins, who became Washington's full-time starter in 2015 and made his first Pro Bowl in 2016. Washington averaged more than 400 yards per game in 2016, the first season in franchise history to reach that mark.

The Rams hired McVay as their head coach in January 2017 at age 30. His appointment made him the youngest head coach in modern NFL history at the time. McVay inherited a team that had finished 2016 with the league's lowest-scoring offense, then guided Los Angeles to an 11-5 record, the NFC West title, and its first playoff appearance since 2004 in his first season. He won the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award after the campaign.

The Rams reached Super Bowl LIII during McVay's second season after finishing 13-3 and defeating the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game. At age 33, McVay became the youngest head coach to lead a team to the Super Bowl. Los Angeles lost the game 13-3 to the New England Patriots.

After missing the playoffs in 2019, the Rams returned in 2020 and won a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. In 2021, McVay guided a team led by quarterback Matthew Stafford to a 12-5 record and another Super Bowl appearance. The Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI, making McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history to win the championship.

The Rams missed the playoffs with a 5-12 record in 2022, and McVay considered stepping away from coaching before deciding to remain with the team. Los Angeles returned to the playoffs in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The Rams won the NFC West in 2024, reached the NFC Championship Game in 2025, and McVay became the winningest head coach in franchise history.

McVay's success helped inspire the phrase "Sean McVay effect," which refers to the NFL's increased interest in hiring younger, offensively minded head coaches. Former McVay assistants including Matt LaFleur, Zac Taylor, Kevin O'Connell, and Liam Coen went on to become head coaches.
