Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen married his Norwegian-American girlfriend, Ella Victoria Malone, in Oslo in January 2025. The couple welcomed their first child, a son, in September 2025.

Carlsen’s father taught him chess when he was five, and he played in his first tournament at eight. As a child, he also demonstrated an exceptional memory, including the ability to recall extensive geographical information and complete complex puzzles at an early age.

In 2002, Carlsen finished second in the boys’ under-12 division at the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship in Greece. He won his first tournament in Wijk aan Zee in January 2004, defeating adult opponents in a lower-rated group. That year, he defeated former world champion Anatoly Karpov in a blitz event in Reykjavík and drew against Garry Kasparov. He became a grandmaster after finishing second at the Dubai Open Chess Championship in April 2004, at age 13.

Carlsen won the Pearl Spring Chess Tournament in Nanjing in 2009 with eight points from ten games, a result regarded as one of the strongest tournament performances in chess history. He also won the World Blitz Championship in Moscow that year. In January 2010, FIDE announced him as the top player in the world, making him the youngest player to reach number one.

Carlsen qualified for the 2013 Candidates Tournament in London and earned the right to challenge Viswanathan Anand for the world championship. He defeated Anand in Chennai in November 2013, winning three games and drawing seven, and became the second-youngest world champion. He retained the title against Anand in 2014, Sergey Karjakin in 2016, and Fabiano Caruana in 2018. Against Caruana, the match was tied after 12 classical games before Carlsen won the rapid tiebreak.

In 2019, Carlsen won the World Rapid and World Blitz Championships in Moscow. He consequently became the first player to hold the classical, rapid, and blitz FIDE world titles simultaneously. That year he also reached a peak FIDE rating of 2882, the highest recorded in chess history.

From 2018 to 2020, Carlsen went 125 classical games without a loss, setting a record unbeaten streak. He won his fifth classical world championship title against Ian Nepomniachtchi in Dubai in 2021. The sixth game lasted 136 moves over seven hours and 45 minutes, making it the longest game in the history of a world championship match.

In 2022, Carlsen announced that he would not defend his title in 2023, explaining that he was not motivated to do so while continuing to play competitive chess.

Carlsen has competed across classical, rapid, blitz, and Chess960 formats. He won the World Rapid Championship in 2014 and 2015, and later added further rapid and blitz titles. He participated in the 2019 and 2023 World Chess960 Championships but did not win either event.

His playing style emphasizes positional control of the board, and his exceptional memory has helped him prepare a wide range of openings. He has also promoted more accessible and visually engaging presentations of chess, including the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge.

Beyond competitive chess, Carlsen has founded or led ventures including Play Magnus Group, Offerspill Chess Club, and Take Take Take. His activities have extended into technology, gaming, and sports-related projects.
