Quinn Hughes

Hughes was born in Orlando, Florida, into a prominent ice hockey family. His mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, was a collegiate standout at the University of New Hampshire and earned a silver medal with the United States women's national ice hockey team at the 1992 World Championship. His father, Jim Hughes, served as team captain at Providence College and later worked as an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins and director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hughes has two younger brothers, Jack and Luke, who were both selected as top-five NHL draft picks by the New Jersey Devils.

The family relocated to Toronto in 2006 when his father joined the Toronto Marlies coaching staff. Hughes began playing hockey as a forward before transitioning to defense at the age of 13. He played youth hockey for the Toronto Marlboros before joining the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) in 2015. Hughes holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Canada.

Hughes joined the University of Michigan Wolverines for the 2017-18 season, studying sport management in the School of Kinesiology. As the youngest player in NCAA Division I men's hockey during his rookie season, he recorded five goals and 24 assists in 37 games. His 24 assists established a new Michigan program record for a freshman defenseman, earning him spots on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten Second Team.

After being selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the 2018 NHL draft, Hughes elected to return to Michigan for his sophomore season. During the 2018-19 campaign, he recorded 33 points in 32 games to lead the Wolverines in scoring. He was named a first-team AHCA All-American, earned All-Big Ten First Team honors, and was a finalist for both the Hobey Baker Award and Big Ten Player of the Year. Following the conclusion of the season in March 2019, he concluded his collegiate career by signing an entry-level contract with Vancouver.

Hughes made his NHL debut on March 28, 2019, recording an assist against the Los Angeles Kings. In his first full season in 2019-20, he led all NHL rookies in scoring with 53 points, finishing as the runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy and earning a selection to the NHL All-Rookie Team. During the 2020 postseason, he set an NHL rookie defenseman record by tallying 14 assists in 17 playoff games.

In September 2023, Hughes was named the 15th captain in Vancouver Canucks history, becoming the youngest active captain in the league. During the 2023-24 season, he led all NHL defensemen with a career-high 92 points (17 goals and 75 assists) across 82 games. He helped lead the Canucks to a first-place finish in the Pacific Division and became the first player in franchise history to win the James Norris Memorial Trophy. Over his tenure in Vancouver, he established franchise records for defenseman assists and total points, surpassing Alexander Edler's career mark on October 11, 2025.

On December 12, 2025, the Canucks traded Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round draft selection. Hughes made an immediate impact, scoring a goal in his debut on December 14 in a 6-2 victory against the Boston Bruins.

On January 19, 2026, Hughes became the fastest player in Minnesota Wild franchise history to record 20 points, achieving the milestone in only 18 games after recording an assist in a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Hughes has represented the United States at multiple international levels. He helped lead the American team to a gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World U18 Championships, followed by bronze and silver medals at the 2018 and 2019 World Junior Championships. In 2018, while still a college freshman, he became the youngest player on the senior United States national team roster at the IIHF World Championship, where the team earned a bronze medal.

At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Hughes played a pivotal role in the United States winning its first men's hockey Olympic gold medal since 1980. He scored the overtime game-winning goal against Sweden in the quarterfinals and set the American Olympic record for most assists in a single tournament featuring NHL players. Hughes was selected to the Olympic All-Star Team and was named the tournament's Best Defender by the IIHF.
