Charlie Kirk

Kirk married Erika Frantzve, a businesswoman, podcaster, and former Miss Arizona USA, in May 2021. They had two children, a daughter born in 2022 and a son born in 2024. The family kept the children's identities private in public photographs.

Kirk was an evangelical Christian and belonged to the Calvary Chapel Association. His religious views became increasingly central to his political work, particularly after he partnered with pastor Rob McCoy to launch Turning Point Faith in 2021.

Kirk became politically active as a teenager. At age 17, he wrote an op-ed for Breitbart News criticizing what he viewed as liberal bias in his high school textbooks, which led to an appearance on Fox News. He briefly attended Harper College before leaving after one semester to pursue political activism full time.

In 2012, when he was 18, Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA with conservative businessman Bill Montgomery. The organization was created to engage young people in conservative causes and to provide a student-focused counterpart to progressive groups such as MoveOn.org.

Kirk remained Turning Point USA's executive director, chief fundraiser, and public face until his death. The organization expanded into related groups including Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith, while its campus events and rallies became important parts of the conservative youth movement.

Kirk became known for traveling to college campuses and debating students who opposed his views. He commonly sat behind a table marked "Prove Me Wrong" and invited students to challenge his positions on immigration, abortion, transgender rights, diversity programs, climate change, and other political issues.

Turning Point recorded many of these exchanges and distributed short clips online. The confrontational format helped Kirk build a large following on social media and turned campus debates into a central part of his public identity. In the summer before his death, he also debated students at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

From 2020 until his death, Kirk hosted The Charlie Kirk Show, a daily radio program and podcast. He also appeared in programs including Turning Point Tonight and Charlie Kirk Today, and his screen credits included producing Border Battle, Identity Crisis, and Race War.

Kirk initially expressed reservations about Donald Trump's 2016 candidacy, but he became a Trump supporter during the Republican National Convention. He later assisted with travel and media arrangements for Donald Trump Jr. and became a regular presence at Turning Point conferences attended by Trump and members of his family.

Kirk supported J.D. Vance's political rise before Vance entered national politics. Vance credited Kirk with encouraging him to run for the Senate and helping introduce him to campaign advisers and Donald Trump Jr.

Through Turning Point Action, Kirk helped organize youth outreach and voter mobilization for Republican candidates. His campus tours before the 2024 presidential election were credited by allies with helping Trump improve his support among young voters. In March 2025, Trump appointed Kirk to the U.S. Air Force Academy Board of Visitors.

Kirk advocated conservative positions including opposition to abortion, gun control, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and transgender rights. He became increasingly associated with Christian nationalism and argued that Christianity should have a central role in American public life. He also promoted traditional gender roles and opposed same-sex marriage.

His public statements and media work generated sustained criticism. Controversies included his promotion of false claims about COVID-19 treatments and the 2020 election, his criticism of George Floyd and Martin Luther King Jr., and remarks about Black Americans, Jewish communities, immigrants, Muslims, and LGBTQ people. Turning Point USA's Professor Watchlist also drew criticism from academic organizations, which said it encouraged harassment of professors.

Kirk described himself as a free-speech advocate and used his campus events to argue that conservative ideas should be debated in settings he viewed as dominated by liberal opinion. Critics characterized his rhetoric as divisive, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, or extreme.

On September 10, 2025, Kirk was speaking at a Turning Point USA event called "The American Comeback Tour" at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, when he was fatally shot. He was taken to a hospital and died later that day. Authorities arrested Tyler James Robinson two days later, and prosecutors charged him with aggravated murder and other offenses.

Kirk's memorial service was held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on September 21, 2025, with nearly 100,000 people attending. Erika Kirk spoke at the service and said that she forgave the man accused of killing her husband.

President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom on October 14, 2025. Erika Kirk accepted the medal on his behalf. Kirk's final book, Stop, in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life, was published posthumously in December 2025.
