Donald Trump has been married to Melania Trump since 2005, and they have one son, Barron. He was previously married to Ivana Trump from 1977 to 1992 and to Marla Maples from 1993 to 1999.

Trump has five children: Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, Tiffany Trump, and Barron Trump. His older children Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric became involved in the Trump Organization, while Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, served as senior White House advisers during Trump's first presidency.

Trump joined his father Fred Trump's real estate business after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1968. He took over the company in the early 1970s, renamed it the Trump Organization, and expanded its activities from residential properties in New York's outer boroughs into Manhattan hotels, office buildings, luxury residences, casinos, golf courses, and branded products.

His major early Manhattan projects included the Grand Hyatt Hotel, which opened in 1980, and Trump Tower, which opened in 1983. He later developed or acquired properties including Trump Plaza, the Plaza Hotel, and Trump World Tower. His Atlantic City holdings included Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, Trump Castle, and the Trump Taj Mahal.

The company faced severe financial difficulties during the recession of the early 1990s. The Trump Taj Mahal and Trump Plaza Hotel entered bankruptcy protection, and Trump later used corporate restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings to reorganize debts. Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts entered bankruptcy protection in 2004 and again in later years, while the gambling businesses had ceased operating by the time he launched his presidential campaign in 2015.

Trump also licensed his name to hotels, resorts, golf courses, and consumer products. He published business books including Trump: The Art of the Deal, which was released in 1987, and the Trump Organization remained a collection of businesses and licensing arrangements managed by Trump and, later, his sons.

Trump's public profile expanded beyond real estate through NBC's reality television series The Apprentice, which began in 2004. He played himself as the host and judge of business challenges, ending episodes with the phrase "You're fired." The program and its companion series, Celebrity Apprentice, presented him to national audiences as an authoritative business personality.

Trump also appeared as himself in films and television programs, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Nanny, The Drew Carey Show, Zoolander, and Two Weeks Notice. He owned the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA pageants from 1996 to 2015, then sold his stake after broadcasters declined to air the pageants during his 2015 presidential campaign.

Trump announced his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in June 2015, using the slogan "Make America Great Again." He won the Republican nomination with Mike Pence as his running mate and defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. He was inaugurated as the 45th president on January 20, 2017, becoming the first U.S. president who had never previously held public office or military leadership.

During his first term, Trump signed a major tax reform bill, reduced federal regulations, expanded military funding, and renegotiated trade agreements with Mexico, Canada, China, Japan, and South Korea. His administration also launched the Space Force, supported Operation Warp Speed's vaccine development effort during the COVID-19 pandemic, pursued changes to immigration and border policy, and enacted criminal justice and veterans' health reforms.

Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court and appointed more than 200 federal judges. His administration moved the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and helped broker normalization agreements between Israel and several countries. In 2018, he became the first sitting U.S. president to meet with a North Korean leader when he held a summit with Kim Jong Un.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with his dealings with Ukraine. The Senate acquitted him. After he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, Trump refused to concede, and his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The House impeached him for a second time for incitement of insurrection, and the Senate again acquitted him.

Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican nomination in November 2022. He defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the general election, winning both the Electoral College and the popular vote, and was inaugurated for a second term on January 20, 2025, with JD Vance as vice president.

His return to the presidency made him the second U.S. president to serve two nonconsecutive terms, after Grover Cleveland. Trump is also the only president to have been impeached twice and the first person convicted of a felony to be elected president. In 2024, a New York jury found him guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, and the court imposed an unconditional discharge.
