Alicia Silverstone

Silverstone was married to rock musician Christopher Jarecki from 2005 to 2018. They met outside a theater in 1997, dated for eight years, and married in a beachfront ceremony at Lake Tahoe on June 11, 2005.

Silverstone and Jarecki have one son, born in 2011. The couple separated in February 2018, filed for divorce three months later, and finalized their divorce in November of that year.

Silverstone began appearing in television commercials as a child and had her first credited acting role on The Wonder Years in 1992. She made her film debut in The Crush (1993), playing a teenager who seeks revenge on an older man after he rejects her. She became legally emancipated at 15 so she could work the hours required by the film's shooting schedule, and won MTV Movie Awards for Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Villain.

Her appearances in Aerosmith's music videos for "Cryin'," "Amazing," and "Crazy" made her widely recognizable. Director Amy Heckerling then cast her as Cher Horowitz in Clueless (1995), a role that established Silverstone as a teen star. Her performance won the National Board of Review award for Breakthrough Performer and several other honors, including MTV Movie Awards for Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female.

Silverstone followed Clueless with Barbara Wilson, or Batgirl, in Batman & Robin (1997). That same year, she starred in Excess Baggage, the first film released by her production company, First Kiss Productions. She later appeared in Blast from the Past (1999) alongside Brendan Fraser, Christopher Walken, and Sissy Spacek.

During the 2000s, Silverstone shifted toward smaller films and stage work. She played the Princess of France in Kenneth Branagh's Love's Labour's Lost, provided the voice of Sharon Spitz in the animated series Braceface, and made her Broadway debut as Elaine Robinson in The Graduate.

In 2003, Silverstone starred as matrimonial attorney and matchmaker Kate Fox in the NBC series Miss Match. Although the series ended after 11 episodes, the role earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy. Her other work during the decade included Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Beauty Shop, Stormbreaker, and the Hallmark Hall of Fame film Candles on Bay Street.

Silverstone continued performing on stage in Boston Marriage, Speed-the-Plow, and Time Stands Still. She reprised her role in Time Stands Still for Broadway in 2010 and later appeared in Of Good Stock. Her screen work in the 2010s included Vamps, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Tribes of Palos Verdes, Book Club, and the television series American Woman.

In the 2020s, she played Elizabeth Brewer in Netflix's The Baby-Sitters Club, voiced Queen Marlena in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and appeared in Reptile, Y2K, and Krazy House. She also executive produced the documentary I Could Never Go Vegan.

Silverstone became vegan in 1998 after attending an animal-rights meeting. She has supported PETA activities, received PETA's Sexiest Female Vegetarian designation in 2004, and appeared in the organization's campaigns promoting vegetarianism and opposition to wool. She also established a sanctuary for rescued pets in Los Angeles.

Her activism has included environmental and animal-rights work, a letter to Vladimir Putin requesting vegan meals for Russian prisoners during the Pussy Riot trial, and a campaign with her son encouraging schools to use alternatives to animal dissection. She received a Heart of Green Award in 2009 and a Voice of Compassion Award from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in 2010.

Silverstone published The Kind Diet in 2009 and The Kind Mama in 2014. The Kind Diet reached the top of The New York Times Hardcover Advice and Miscellaneous bestseller list, and its associated website, The Kind Life, launched alongside the book.
