Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and her maternal grandmother is actress Tippi Hedren. Her extended family includes half-siblings Jesse Johnson, Alexander Bauer, Stella Banderas, Grace Johnson, Jasper Johnson, and Deacon Johnson, as well as half-aunt Tracy Griffith and relative Clay A. Griffith.

Antonio Banderas was Johnson's former stepfather. Johnson and her half-sister Stella Banderas appeared together in Crazy in Alabama, alongside their mother, Melanie Griffith.

Because of her parents' careers, Johnson spent much of her childhood traveling to filming locations and accompanying them to premieres. She spent time in Aspen and Woody Creek, Colorado, attended the Aspen Community School, and later went to the Santa Catalina School in Monterey before transferring to New Roads School in Santa Monica. During her teenage years, she worked summers at a local market in Woody Creek, where she was a neighbor of writer Hunter S. Thompson.

Johnson became interested in modeling at 12 after participating in a Teen Vogue photo shoot with other celebrities' children. She modeled while attending high school and later signed with IMG Models. Her campaigns included MANGO's jeans line in 2009 and the Australian label Wish's “Rising Star” campaign in 2011.

Johnson's breakthrough came with Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), in which she played Anastasia “Ana” Steele opposite Jamie Dornan. She reprised the role in Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018). The trilogy earned more than $1 billion worldwide, and Johnson received a People's Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress for the first film.

During the same period, Johnson pursued roles outside the franchise. She appeared with Johnny Depp in Black Mass (2015), starred in Luca Guadagnino's A Bigger Splash (2015), and led the romantic comedy How to Be Single (2016). She reunited with Guadagnino for Suspiria (2018), a remake of the 1977 horror film, and played Emily Summerspring in Bad Times at the El Royale (2018).

Her 2019 work included the psychological horror film Wounds, the independent adventure film The Peanut Butter Falcon, and the drama Our Friend. She also sang several songs for the Our Friend soundtrack. Her performance in The Peanut Butter Falcon was part of a film that became the highest-grossing independent film of that year.

Johnson starred with Tracee Ellis Ross in The High Note (2020), appeared in The Nowhere Inn, and played Nina in Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter (2021). Her 2022 credits included the Jane Austen adaptation Persuasion, the coming-of-age film Cha Cha Real Smooth, and the dramedy Am I OK? She also co-produced Cha Cha Real Smooth and Am I OK?

In 2019, Johnson founded the production company TeaTime Pictures with Ro Donnelly. The company later expanded its production activities, and Johnson has received producer or executive-producer credits on projects including Daddio, The Disappearance of Shere Hite, Slip, Splitsville, and Verity.

Johnson starred opposite Sean Penn in Daddio (2023), played the title character in the superhero film Madame Web (2024), and appeared in Splitsville and Celine Song's Materialists (2025). She co-directed Coldplay's “Cry Cry Cry” music video with Cory Bailey in 2020 and is set to make her feature directorial debut with A Tree Is Blue.

Johnson's performance as Anastasia Steele established her as a sex symbol, but her subsequent work has ranged from major studio films and comedies to independent dramas, art films, and horror.
