Saweetie was born Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper to Trinidad Valentin, a former video model of Filipino and Chinese heritage, and Johnny Harper, an African American former athlete. She has twin younger sisters, Milan and Maya. Her family includes several athletes and musicians. Her grandfather Willie Harper played professional football for the San Francisco 49ers, her uncle Josh Harper played for Fresno State, and recording artist MC Hammer is her uncle. Producer Zaytoven and actress Gabrielle Union are her cousins.

She began dating rapper Quavo of Migos in September 2018 after meeting at New York Fashion Week. The relationship ended in March 2021. She later dated rapper YG in 2023. Since 2025, she has been in a relationship with English footballer Jadon Sancho.

Saweetie grew up in Hayward and Sacramento. She started writing music at 13. After high school in Elk Grove, she enrolled at San Diego State University to study communication and business. She then transferred to the University of Southern California. College was demanding. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 2016 and turned her focus toward rap.

Initial momentum arrived through social media. In 2016, she began posting short clips of herself rapping in her car on Instagram. A clip using the instrumental of Khia's "My Neck, My Back" spread quickly online and evolved into her breakout single, "Icy Grl." The track brought her to the attention of music executive Max Gousse. She signed a joint venture with Warner Records and launched her own imprint, Icy Records, in early 2018.

Her major-label debut EP, High Maintenance, arrived in March 2018 with production from CashMoneyAP and Zaytoven. A year later, she released her second EP, Icy. That project produced "My Type," a Petey Pablo-sampling track that climbed to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song earned quadruple platinum status.

In June 2020, she released "Tap In," which reached number 20 on the Hot 100 and topped urban radio charts. She followed in January 2021 with "Best Friend," a collaboration with Doja Cat that peaked inside the top 20. The single earned an MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Direction. It also secured Saweetie two nominations at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Rap Song and Best New Artist. That same year, she won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist.

Saweetie stepped into television acting in 2021, playing the recurring character Indigo on three episodes of Grown-ish. She hosted the Netflix comedy special Sex: Unzipped that autumn and made her musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live, performing "Icy Chain," "Tap In," and "Best Friend." Further screen appearances included guest roles on Bel-Air, BMF, and the comedy film Idiotka.

Her commercial profile expanded alongside music. In 2021, McDonald's rolled out the nationwide "Saweetie Meal." She also designed capsule fashion collections with PrettyLittleThing and fronted cosmetics campaigns for Morphe and MAC Cosmetics alongside Cher.
