Vanessa Williams

Williams grew up in Millwood, New York, in a musical household. Her parents, Milton Augustine Williams Jr. and Helen Tinch, were both elementary school music teachers. Her younger brother Chris Williams became an actor. Williams was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which she later addressed in her 2012 joint memoir with her mother, You Have No Idea.

She has been married three times. In 1987, she married public relations specialist Ramon Hervey II, who had been hired to manage her career after the pageant controversy. The couple had three children, Melanie, Jillian, and Devin, before divorcing in 1997. Her daughter Jillian Hervey later formed the musical duo Lion Babe.

Williams married NBA player Rick Fox in 1999. They had a daughter, Sasha Gabriella, and divorced in 2004. In 2015, she married business executive Jim Skrip. That marriage ended in divorce in 2021.

While studying musical theater at Syracuse University on a drama scholarship, Williams entered local pageants. She won Miss Greater Syracuse and Miss New York in 1983. On September 17, 1983, she was crowned Miss America 1984 after winning the preliminary talent competition with a performance of "Happy Days Are Here Again".

Her reign ended abruptly in July 1984. Penthouse magazine purchased and published unauthorized nude photographs taken of her years earlier. Pageant officials pressured her to step down. She resigned her crown with weeks left in her term, and runner-up Suzette Charles took over the title. In September 2015, Williams served as head judge for Miss America 2016, where pageant CEO Sam Haskell offered her an official on-stage apology.

Williams launched her recording career in 1988 with the album The Right Stuff. The single "Dreamin'" reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B chart. The release earned her an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist and three Grammy nominations.

Her 1991 follow-up, The Comfort Zone, became a major commercial hit. It achieved triple-platinum certification in the United States and generated five Grammy nominations. The ballad "Save the Best for Last" reached number one in the United States, Canada, and Australia. In 1995, she recorded the pop release of "Colors of the Wind" for Disney's animated film Pocahontas. The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and earned her another Grammy nomination.

Later studio projects included The Sweetest Days (1994), two holiday albums, and Survivor (2024), released through her own label Mellian Music.

Williams made early screen appearances on The Love Boat in 1984 and in the 1987 film The Pick-up Artist. In 1996, she co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action thriller Eraser. A year later, she won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role as Teri Joseph in Soul Food. She followed with parts in Hoodlum (1997), Shaft (2000), and Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009).

Television brought substantial acclaim. From 2006 to 2010, she played magazine editor Wilhelmina Slater on ABC's Ugly Betty. The comedic villain role brought her three consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In 2010, she joined the cast of Desperate Housewives as Renee Perry for its final two seasons. Later television projects included the drama Daytime Divas (2017) and regular voice roles on animated series such as T.O.T.S..

Williams made her Broadway debut in 1994, replacing Chita Rivera in the title role of Kiss of the Spider Woman. Critics praised her stage presence and vocal control. The production proved a box-office success during her run.

In 2002, she earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as the Witch in Stephen Sondheim's revival of Into the Woods. She returned to Broadway in the musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim (2010), the 2013 revival of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful, and the 2022 political comedy POTUS. In 2024, she took on the role of Miranda Priestly in the London West End musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada at the Dominion Theatre.
