Andy Samberg is an American actor and comedian known for the Lonely Island's Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts and his role as Jake Peralta on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He has also starred in films including Hot Rod, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and Palm Springs.

Personal life

Samberg has been married to musician Joanna Newsom since 2013. They met at one of Newsom's concerts in 2006, and Saturday Night Live cast member Seth Meyers served as Samberg's groomsman at their wedding in Big Sur, California.

Samberg and Newsom have two children. Their first child was born in 2017, and the birth of their second child was announced in 2023.

Early life and education

Samberg was born in Berkeley, California, to photographer Joe Samberg and elementary school teacher Marjorie Samberg. He grew up with two older sisters and attended Berkeley schools, where he developed an interest in creative writing and performed comedy sketches with childhood friends Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.

After graduating from Berkeley High School in 1996, Samberg studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz, before transferring to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He graduated from NYU in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film.

The Lonely Island, Saturday Night Live, and first movies

Samberg, Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer reunited in Los Angeles after college and formed the comedy trio the Lonely Island, named after the apartment where they lived. They made short comedy videos called Digital Shorts and posted them online, gaining attention for sketches such as “White Power,” “Regarding Andy,” and “Awesometown.” Their work led to an opportunity to write for the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, where host Jimmy Fallon introduced them to Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels.

Michaels hired Samberg as a featured performer and brought Taccone and Schaffer onto Saturday Night Live as writers. Samberg became widely recognized for Digital Shorts including “Lazy Sunday,” performed with Chris Parnell, and “Dick in a Box,” performed with Justin Timberlake. “Dick in a Box” won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, while “I'm on a Boat,” made with T-Pain, received a Grammy nomination.

Samberg left Saturday Night Live in 2012 after seven seasons. During his time on the program, he began his film career with Hot Rod, in which he starred alongside Isla Fisher, while Taccone acted in the film and Schaffer directed it. Other early films included I Love You, Man, Friends with Benefits, That's My Boy, and Celeste and Jesse Forever. The Lonely Island released its debut album, Incredibad, in 2009.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, concurrent movies, and marriage

Soon after leaving Saturday Night Live, Samberg took the lead role of Detective Jake Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He played the wise-cracking detective from 2013 to 2021 and also served as a producer on the series. His performance earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, in 2014.

Samberg continued working in film and television during the show's run. He voiced Jonathan in the Hotel Transylvania franchise and starred as a flamboyant tennis player in the HBO mockumentary 7 Days in Hell. He also co-wrote and starred in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping with Taccone and Schaffer, who directed the film.

In Palm Springs, Samberg played Nyles, a wedding guest trapped in a repeating day. The 2020 dark comedy also marked one of his producing credits and earned him a Critics' Choice Super Award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie.

Lee and other projects after Brooklyn Nine-Nine

After Brooklyn Nine-Nine ended, Samberg voiced Dale in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Ben Reilly, also known as Scarlet Spider, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He appeared in Self Reliance and continued providing voice performances in animated projects.

In the biographical film Lee, Samberg portrayed David Scherman, a Life magazine war correspondent who worked alongside photographer Lee Miller while documenting the effects of World War II. He also co-created, wrote, produced, and voiced the lead character Rip Digman in the animated series Digman!

Samberg returned to Saturday Night Live for later appearances, including a portrayal of Doug Emhoff during the 2024 presidential campaign. He also co-hosts The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast with Taccone, Schaffer, and Seth Meyers.
