Carrot Top was born Scott Christopher Thompson in Rockledge, Florida, and grew up in nearby Cocoa. His father, Larry Thompson, was a NASA engineer who worked on the Gemini and Apollo missions. His red hair inspired the nickname “Carrot Top,” which a local swimming coach gave him.

He attended Cocoa High School, where he played drums in the marching and concert bands, and graduated in 1983. He later attended Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. During his freshman year, he performed stand-up comedy at an open-mic night, initially using material written by other people before developing jokes based on college life. After earning a marketing degree, he worked as a courier for a mortgage company and performed comedy on the side.

Carrot Top's comedy is built around observational humor, satire, and visual gags involving custom-made props. His act typically uses trunks filled with inventions and everyday objects, with jokes delivered through quick one-liners and physical demonstrations. His performances also incorporate lighting, music, fog, and other elements associated with large stage productions.

His first television appearance was on Comic Strip Live in 1991, followed by an appearance on Star Search. A guest spot on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1992 expanded his national audience. He later became a spokesman for AT&T's 1-800-CALL-ATT service and made frequent appearances on talk shows, comedy programs, and game shows.

Since 2005, Carrot Top has headlined shows at MGM Resorts International properties in Las Vegas. His residency at the Luxor Hotel began on November 22, 2005, and has remained a central part of his live career.

Carrot Top's film credits include Chairman of the Board, in which he played Edison, and Dennis the Menace Strikes Again!, in which he played Sylvester. He starred alongside Courtney Thorne-Smith in Chairman of the Board. Other film appearances include The Aristocrats, Pauly Shore Is Dead, The Hangover, Swearnet: The Movie, and Sharknado: The 4th Awakens.

On television, he has appeared as himself or in guest roles on Scrubs, George Lopez, Reno 911!, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Neighbors, Glee, and Hacks. He has also provided voice performances for Family Guy and Robot Chicken. In Reno 911!, he played an enraged version of himself who trashed a hotel room and stole a police car.

From 1995 to 1999, Carrot Top served as a continuity announcer for Cartoon Network. He also produced and starred in the network's early-morning program Carrot Top's AM Mayhem from 1994 to 1996.

He has appeared on programs including Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Criss Angel Mindfreak, Tosh.0, Last Comic Standing, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and At Midnight. He also appeared with Toby Keith in the music video for “Red Solo Cup” and alongside Rhett and Link on Good Mythical Morning.
