Kathy Sabine

Sabine married at 22 and later married Scott Crawford, her second husband, on September 24, 2005. She has three children, including two older children who live in Los Angeles and a son she has with Crawford. Crawford, a homebuilder, helps manage the family's barn and hay operation on their 40-acre property.

In 2022, Sabine was diagnosed with skin cancer and shared photographs and accounts of her surgeries and recovery. She is also a foundation board member of Teen With A Dream, a youth cancer organization.

Sabine grew up with her family at a log cabin near Truckee, California, where her parents operated Soda Springs, a lodge and ski resort near the Sierra Snow Lab. She learned to ski at age two and became interested in snow science by watching researchers measure snowpack and water content for California.

As a teenager, she rode horses, trained them, competed in rodeo, and became a rodeo queen. She initially attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo to study veterinary science, but financial pressures and an interest in writing and speech led her toward journalism and broadcasting.

While studying at Cal Poly, Sabine became a production intern at KSBY NBC-TV. She worked behind the scenes as a chyron operator, camera operator, audio technician, floor director, and tape operator. Meteorologist Sharon Graves became her mentor, teaching her weather in exchange for riding lessons.

Sabine practiced forecasting and anchoring after work, eventually earning weekend weather assignments at a San Luis Obispo station. She later worked in weather at stations in Santa Barbara, Salinas, and San Jose before joining KUSA 9News in Denver in 1993.

At KUSA, she won an Emmy during her first year as weekend weather anchor and weekday storm chaser. She later completed additional meteorology education and earned seals from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. In 2005, general manager Roger Ogden promoted her to chief meteorologist, a position she held while appearing on the station's 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10 o'clock newscasts.

Sabine also served as a regular fill-in meteorologist on NBC's Today, traveling to New York for holiday broadcasts and other appearances. During one storm assignment, she and photographer Eric Kehe found themselves in front of two tornadoes, prompting comparisons to Helen Hunt's storm-chasing character in Twister.

Sabine has received seven Emmy Awards, Colorado Broadcasting Association honors, and Associated Press recognition for her weather work. She was named best meteorologist by the Colorado Broadcasters Association in 2020, while Westword and 5280 have honored her as a favorite news personality and best weather anchor.

Her work outside the newsroom reflects her long connection to horses and animals. She has been affiliated with Colorado Horse Rescue, Harmony Equestrian Center, and the National Western Stock Show, and has hosted animal-shelter fundraisers, junior livestock auctions, and other community events. She also participated in the Great American Horse Drive in Craig, Colorado, riding with a group that moved 500 horses roughly 60 miles over two days.
