Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, Catalonia, and grew up between Granollers and Mataró. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, is from Morocco, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, is from Equatorial Guinea. His parents separated during his early childhood, and his paternal grandmother, Fatima, played an important role in raising him and helping him attend football training. He began playing organised football at age four with local club CF La Torreta.

Yamal was scouted by Barcelona at age six and joined La Masia in 2014. He progressed rapidly through the academy, often playing above his age group, and Barcelona made an exception to its usual accommodation policy by having him live at La Masia. In 2022, coach Xavi Hernández invited him to train with the first team.

On 29 April 2023, Yamal made his Barcelona first-team debut against Real Betis at 15 years, 9 months and 16 days old. He became the youngest player to appear for Barcelona's first team since Armando Sagi in 1922. He later became the club's youngest starter and, in October 2023, scored against Granada to become the youngest goalscorer in La Liga history.

Yamal made his first Barcelona start in August 2023 during a 2-0 victory over Cádiz, becoming the youngest starter in the club's history. In his next starting appearance, he supplied two assists in a 4-3 win over Villarreal and was named player of the match. He made his Champions League debut against Royal Antwerp in September and scored his first senior goal against Granada the following month.

During the 2023-24 season, Yamal became the youngest player to reach 50 appearances for Barcelona. He also set age records in the Supercopa de España and Copa del Rey, and received the Golden Boy youngest-player award. His performances earned him the 2024 Kopa Trophy, awarded to the world's best young player.

Under manager Hansi Flick, Yamal became a central figure in Barcelona's attack. In the 2024-25 season he helped the club win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España, while becoming the youngest goalscorer in El Clásico history. He became the youngest Barcelona player to reach 100 appearances and won the Kopa Trophy for a second consecutive year. Barcelona later presented him with the number 10 shirt, previously worn by Lionel Messi, and agreed a contract keeping him at the club until June 2031.

Yamal represented Catalonia at youth level before playing for Spain's under-15, under-16 and under-17 teams. He scored four goals at the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. In September 2023, he made his senior Spain debut against Georgia and scored in the 7-1 victory. At 16 years and 57 days old, he became Spain's youngest player and youngest goalscorer.

At UEFA Euro 2024, Yamal became the youngest player to appear in the competition. He provided four assists, including one for Nico Williams in the final, as Spain defeated England to win its fourth European Championship. In the semi-final against France, he scored from outside the penalty area and became the youngest goalscorer in European Championship history. He was named Young Player of the Tournament, and his goal was selected as the tournament's best.

Yamal was part of Spain's 2026 World Cup-winning squad. He scored his first World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia and helped Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in the final. The victory made him the youngest player to win both the European Championship and the World Cup.

Yamal is a left-footed forward who usually operates as an inverted winger on the right flank. He can also play as a centre-forward or attacking midfielder. His game is built around close control, dribbling, passing, chance creation and the ability to vary the tempo of an attack.

One of his signature techniques is the outside-of-the-foot cross known as a trivela. His playing style has drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi and Neymar, with Neymar identified as a major influence on his football. Yamal's goal celebrations often feature the number 304, referring to the final three digits of the postcode for Rocafonda, the Mataró neighbourhood where he grew up.

His major individual honours include two Kopa Trophies, the 2024 Golden Boy award, the 2024 European Championship Young Player of the Tournament award and the 2025 Ballon d'Or runner-up position. He was also named La Liga Player of the Season for 2025-26.

Yamal is a Muslim and observes Ramadan. His observance includes fasting from dawn until sunset during the month, including around training and football matches.

In 2026, he condemned anti-Muslim and xenophobic chants directed at Egyptian players during a Spain friendly. He also showed solidarity with Palestinians by waving a Palestinian flag during Barcelona's title parade. In June 2026, UNICEF named him a Goodwill Ambassador focused on children's right to play and children affected by humanitarian emergencies.
