Sergio Ramos

Ramos began a relationship with Spanish television presenter and journalist Pilar Rubio in September 2012. The couple announced their engagement in July 2018 and married in Seville on 15 June 2019. Together, they have four sons: Sergio, Marco, Alejandro, and Máximo Adriano.

Family plays a central role in his career, with his brother, Rene Ramos, serving as his primary football agent. Ramos is also the second cousin of former Spanish footballer José Mari. Outside of football, he is an avid art collector and owns a stud farm in Andalusia dedicated to breeding Andalusian horses; his horse, Yucatán SR4, won a World Championship title in 2018. Ramos is Roman Catholic and was baptised in Madrid at the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de La Moraleja prior to his wedding. In June 2014, he was named an official ambassador for UNICEF Spain.

Born in Camas in the province of Seville, Ramos began his youth football development with local club Camas CF at age six before entering Sevilla's youth academy in 1996. Coming through the ranks alongside players like Jesús Navas and Antonio Puerta, he progressed to the senior squad and made his La Liga debut on 1 February 2004 as a substitute against Deportivo La Coruña.

During the 2004-05 campaign, Ramos established himself as a versatile and athletic defender, making 41 appearances across all competitions. He scored his first continental goal in a UEFA Cup victory over C.D. Nacional and contributed league goals against Real Sociedad and Real Madrid, helping Sevilla secure a sixth-place finish and qualification for European competition.

In the summer of 2005, Real Madrid signed Ramos for €27 million, setting a transfer record for a Spanish defender. Inheriting the number 4 shirt from Fernando Hierro, he initially alternated between central defence and right-back before cementing his place as an elite centre-back. Over sixteen seasons with Real Madrid, Ramos made 671 competitive appearances and scored 101 goals, becoming the fourth-highest appearance maker in the club's history.

His tenure was highlighted by remarkable success in European competition. In the 2014 UEFA Champions League final against Atlético Madrid, Ramos scored a famous 93rd-minute equalising header that enabled Real Madrid to win 4-1 in extra time and secure their tenth European Cup ('La Décima'). After taking over the club captaincy in 2015 following Iker Casillas's departure, Ramos led Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League victories from 2016 to 2018. Across his time in Madrid, he won 22 major honours, including five La Liga titles, four Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, and two Copas del Rey.

In July 2021, Ramos joined Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract. Over two seasons in France, he made 58 appearances across all competitions, contributed six goals, and helped the club capture consecutive Ligue 1 championships along with the 2022 Trophée des Champions.

Upon the expiration of his PSG contract, Ramos returned to his boyhood club Sevilla in September 2023. During the 2023-24 season, he set a record as the highest-scoring defender in Champions League history by netting his 17th goal in the competition with a Panenka penalty against Lens. In February 2025, Ramos signed with Mexican club Monterrey in Liga MX, selecting the jersey number 93 as a tribute to his stoppage-time goal in the 2014 Champions League final. While competing for Monterrey at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, he scored against Inter Milan at 39 years and 80 days old, becoming the oldest goalscorer in tournament history.

Ramos made his senior debut for Spain in March 2005 at 18 years and 361 days old, becoming the youngest player to debut for the national side in 55 years at the time. Throughout his international career, he wore the number 15 jersey for Spain in honour of his close friend and former Sevilla teammate Antonio Puerta.

Ramos served as a cornerstone of Spain's golden generation, helping the national team capture the 2010 FIFA World Cup alongside back-to-back UEFA European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012. He later captained the national team and became Spain's all-time appearance leader, finishing his international career with 180 caps and 23 goals before announcing his international retirement in February 2023.

Ramos is widely acknowledged as one of the most complete defenders of his era, celebrated for his commanding aerial presence, athletic strength, precise tackling, and tactical leadership. Beyond his defensive capabilities, he stood out for his exceptional goalscoring output, routinely converting penalties with the Panenka technique and delivering crucial headers in high-stakes matches.

His aggressive defending and competitive intensity also produced an unprecedented disciplinary record. Ramos holds the all-time record for the most red cards (20) and yellow cards (171) in La Liga history, as well as the record for the most cards accumulated in the UEFA Champions League and for the Spanish national team.
