Madonna married actor Sean Penn in 1985. Their marriage received intense media attention before ending in divorce in 1989. In 1996, she gave birth to her first child, Lourdes Leon, whom she had with personal trainer and actor Carlos Leon. She later married British film director Guy Ritchie in December 2000 at Skibo Castle in Scotland. The couple had a son, Rocco Ritchie, born in 2000, before their divorce was finalized in 2008.

In 2006, Madonna adopted a son, David Banda, from Malawi. She expanded her family with the adoption of daughter Mercy James from Malawi in 2009, followed by twin daughters Stella and Estere in 2017. In June 2023, Madonna experienced a medical emergency when she was hospitalized and placed in an induced coma for several days due to a serious bacterial infection, which led to the rescheduling of several North American tour dates.

Born in Bay City, Michigan, Madonna was raised in a large Roman Catholic family. Her father, Silvio Anthony Ciccone, was an engineer of Italian descent, and her mother, Madonna Fortin, was of French-Canadian ancestry. Her mother died of breast cancer in December 1963 when Madonna was five years old, a profound loss that drove her drive for achievement.

During high school, Madonna found a mentor in her dance teacher Christopher Flynn, who encouraged her artistic development and introduced her to Detroit's gay club scene. She studied dance at the University of Michigan before leaving in 1978 to relocate to New York City with only $35. There, she trained with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, performed with modern dance companies, and worked as a backup dancer and singer in Patrick Hernandez's disco revue in Paris. Upon returning to New York, she formed early musical groups including Breakfast Club and Emmy with musicians Dan Gilroy and Stephen Bray before signing a solo recording deal with Sire Records.

Madonna achieved mainstream breakout success in 1983 with her single "Holiday," followed by the multi-platinum 1984 album Like a Virgin. She quickly established herself as a master of the music video format, collaborating with directors such as David Fincher and Mary Lambert, photographers Herb Ritts and Steven Meisel, and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. Her visual output blended religious iconography, eroticism, and street culture, exemplified by the videos for "Like a Prayer" (1989) and "Vogue" (1990), which introduced underground ballroom voguing to global audiences.

In 1992, Madonna established the multimedia entertainment company Maverick in partnership with Time Warner, gaining unprecedented creative and financial autonomy. That year, she published the provocative coffee-table book Sex alongside the studio album Erotica. Alongside her music career, Madonna pursued acting in cinema. In 1998, Madonna released Ray of Light, an electronica and techno album produced with William Orbit that earned critical acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Album. She continued experimenting with electronic dance music on Music (2000) and returned to classic disco with Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005), produced by Stuart Price and featuring the international hit single "Hung Up."

Madonna's live performances set numerous box-office milestones. Her 2008-2009 Sticky & Sweet Tour became the highest-grossing tour by a female artist at the time. In 2023, she launched the Celebration Tour, a career-spanning retrospective that concluded in May 2024 with a free performance at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro before 1.6 million attendees, marking the largest standalone concert audience for any solo recording artist. She later reunited with Stuart Price for the 2026 album Confessions II.
