Mariah the Scientist

Mariah the Scientist graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School a year early and attended St. John's University in New York City on a biology scholarship. She initially planned to become a pediatric anesthesiologist, but began writing songs during college and left during her junior year to pursue music.

Her stage name reflects her interest in science and her academic background. She has also described singing in an elementary school choir and beginning to write material while studying at St. John's.

Mariah the Scientist released her six-track debut EP, To Die For, on SoundCloud in January 2018. Canadian rapper Tory Lanez discovered her music, became a mentor, and later signed her to his One Umbrella label. She also toured with Lanez while developing her sound.

She signed with One Umbrella and RCA Records in February 2019. Her debut studio album, Master, was released on August 23, 2019, with Lanez as executive producer. The album included the songs "Beetlejuice" and "Reminders". "Beetlejuice" appeared in NPR's Heat Check roundup, while the video for "Reminders" premiered on Complex.

Mariah the Scientist released her second studio album, Ry Ry World, on July 16, 2021. The project included the songs "2 You" and "Always n Forever", the latter featuring Lil Baby, and featured guest appearances from Young Thug. She also released a music video for "Aura" from the album.

The album reached number 4 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and was named one of the best R&B albums of the year by NPR. The song "2 You" was included on Pitchfork's list of the 100 best songs of 2021. The album's success led to sold-out shows in Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles, as well as festival appearances.

In March 2022, she released the EP Buckles Laboratories Presents: The Intermission and supported it with The Experimental Tour, which ran from April through July. Its song "Spread Thin" became her first charting song, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and later receiving multi-platinum certification.

After leaving One Umbrella and RCA Records, Mariah signed a joint venture deal with Epic Records. She released To Be Eaten Alive on October 27, 2023, preceded by the single "From a Woman". The album became her first Billboard 200 entry and peaked at number 93. Her January 2024 appearance on Tee Grizzley and Chris Brown's "IDGAF" marked her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, and she later appeared on 21 Savage's "Dark Days", which reached number 70.

Mariah the Scientist's fourth studio album, Hearts Sold Separately, followed To Be Eaten Alive in August 2025. Its lead single, "Burning Blue", was described as being inspired by the music of Prince and became one of her highest-charting songs as a lead artist.

Her 2025 singles "Burning Blue" and "Is It a Crime", featuring Kali Uchis, both entered the Billboard Hot 100's top 30. She has also performed at festivals and events including Coachella, Primavera Sound, Pitchfork Festival, Made in America, Day N Vegas, and Rolling Loud.

Her music is rooted in R&B and incorporates elements of hip-hop. She is known for highly personal narratives, candid perspectives on love, and lyrics shaped by her experiences growing up with her father, whom she has described as a realist.

Mariah has cited OutKast and Frank Ocean as major songwriting influences. Michael Jackson, Prince, and Whitney Houston have also influenced her artistic approach, particularly their clear creative visions and meticulous execution.

Mariah the Scientist began dating Young Thug in 2021. Their relationship was connected to her music through his appearances on Ry Ry World and To Be Eaten Alive.

They announced their engagement in December 2025 during a concert in Atlanta.
