Starsiak studied business and sociology at the University of Indiana. She began renovating homes after buying and remodeling her first house in 2008. She worked as a waitress at the time.

Her mother, Karen Laine, was an attorney. Together they formed Two Chicks and a Hammer, Inc., aiming to revitalize neglected houses across Indianapolis. Starsiak earned a real estate license to support the enterprise. They renovated local houses for seven years before television producers scouted them.

HGTV launched Good Bones in 2016. The series followed Starsiak and Laine through full structural remodels and demolition projects. Other family members joined the crew. Her half-brother Tad led demolition, while former step-father Lenny assisted with construction.
