Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor is an Indian actor known for acclaimed performances in Rockstar, Barfi!, Sanju, and Animal. A member of the Kapoor film dynasty, he has built a career spanning romantic comedies, dramas, biographical films, fantasy, and action cinema.
Personal life
Ranbir Kapoor has been married to actress Alia Bhatt since 2022. They have a daughter named Raha, who was born later that year. Kapoor and Bhatt first worked together in Brahmāstra: Part One: Shiva.
Kapoor dated his Bachna Ae Haseeno co-star Deepika Padukone from 2008 until their relationship ended in 2009. He later said that they had resolved their conflict and moved on with their lives.
Early life and family
Kapoor is the son of actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, the grandson of actor-director Raj Kapoor, and the great-grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor. His elder sister is designer and entrepreneur Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. His extended family includes actors Randhir Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, and Kareena Kapoor.
He was educated at Bombay Scottish School and H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. He studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York and method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Before becoming an actor, he assisted his father on Aa Ab Laut Chalen and Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black.
Debut and rise to stardom
Bhansali cast Kapoor as the lead in Saawariya (2007), a tragic romance co-starring Sonam Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. Although the film was a commercial failure, Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
His first commercial success came with Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). In 2009, Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani established him as a leading actor, while Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year earned critical praise for his performance. Kapoor received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his work across all three films.
Rockstar, Barfi! and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Kapoor's performance as musician Janardhan "Jordan" Jakhar in Rockstar (2011) marked a major shift from his earlier romantic roles. He learned to play the guitar, studied the mannerisms of a Jat family, and performed at a live concert during the film's promotion. The role earned him both the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
In Barfi! (2012), he played a deaf and mute man opposite Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz. The film was submitted as India's entry for the Academy Awards, and Kapoor won a second consecutive Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His reunion with director Ayan Mukerji in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), co-starring Deepika Padukone, produced one of his biggest early successes.
Sanju and later career
After a run of mixed commercial results in films including Roy, Bombay Velvet, and Tamasha, Kapoor starred as actor Sanjay Dutt in Sanju (2018). He interacted extensively with Dutt and underwent physical changes to portray different stages of Dutt's life. The performance re-established Kapoor's commercial standing and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Following a four-year hiatus, he appeared in Shamshera and Brahmāstra: Part One: Shiva in 2022. He then starred in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and played Ranvijay Singh in Animal (2023), a role that took him beyond his usual screen image. Animal became his highest-grossing release and earned him another Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His announced projects include Ramayana and Love & War.
Off-screen work
Kapoor is a co-owner of Mumbai City FC, an Indian Super League football team. He also serves as vice-captain of the All Stars Football Club, which raises money for charity, and has supported organisations focused on girls' football, child welfare, education, health, and environmental causes.
He formed the production company Picture Shuru Productions with director Anurag Basu. Their first release was Jagga Jasoos (2017). Kapoor later became a content and programming adviser to Saavn and launched the lifestyle brand ARKS in 2024.
