Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette married rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway in a private ceremony at her Los Angeles home in 2010. They have three children. She was previously engaged to actor Ryan Reynolds, and their relationship lasted from 2002 to 2007.

Morissette became a U.S. citizen in 2005 while retaining her Canadian citizenship. She was raised in a devout Catholic family and has practised Buddhism for many years. In 2019, she and her family moved from Los Angeles to Olympic Valley, California.

Morissette began studying piano at six and writing songs by nine. At 10, she appeared in five episodes of the children's television series You Can't Do That on Television, using money from the show to record her first single. At 14, she signed a song-publishing deal that led to her first two Canadian dance-pop albums, Alanis (1991) and Now Is the Time (1992). She won the Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist for her debut album.

After moving to Los Angeles, Morissette met songwriter and producer Glen Ballard. Together they wrote and recorded Jagged Little Pill, which became her internationally recognised breakthrough after its 1995 release on Madonna's Maverick Records. The album's singles included "You Oughta Know," "Hand in My Pocket," "Ironic," "You Learn," and "Head over Feet." It sold more than 16 million copies in the United States and earned Morissette four Grammy Awards in 1996, including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. Flea and Dave Navarro of the Red Hot Chili Peppers played on "You Oughta Know."

Morissette followed Jagged Little Pill with Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie in 1998. Co-produced with Glen Ballard, the album incorporated Eastern musical influences and combined ballads with pop songs. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, while "Thank U" became its most successful international single. Her song "Uninvited," written for the film City of Angels, won two Grammy Awards in 1999.

For Under Rug Swept (2002), Morissette served as the album's sole writer and producer. The record debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and the single "Hands Clean" topped the Canadian Singles Chart. Her subsequent albums included So-Called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Entanglement (2008), Havoc and Bright Lights (2012), Such Pretty Forks in the Road (2020), and The Storm Before the Calm (2022). The last of these was a meditation music album co-written and produced with Dave Harrington of the electronic duo Darkside.

Morissette returned to acting in the late 1990s after her childhood television appearances. She played God in Kevin Smith's comedy Dogma (1999) and reprised the role in a post-credits scene in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Her later screen work included De-Lovely, Radio Free Albemuth, The Price of Desire, Weeds, Up All Night, and the animated series The Great North. She also performed in The Vagina Monologues and played Sunny Jacobs in The Exonerated.

The songs of Jagged Little Pill formed the basis of a stage musical that premiered at the American Repertory Theater in 2018 before moving to Broadway in 2019. Morissette wrote the lyrics and co-composed the music with Glen Ballard, while Diablo Cody wrote the book and Diane Paulus directed. The production received 15 Tony Award nominations and won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

Morissette has also worked as a podcast host, advice columnist, workshop leader, and public speaker. Her advocacy has focused on addiction recovery, trauma healing, women's empowerment, and holistic education for children. She was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2005 and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
