Donovan Mitchell

Mitchell is married to singer and actress Coco Jones, whom he became engaged to in 2025. They married in 2026.

He is a fan of the New York Mets and frequently attends games during the offseason. His father, Donovan Mitchell Sr., worked for the Mets for more than twenty years, including as a director of player relations.

Mitchell attended Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, before transferring to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for his junior and senior years. He played basketball and baseball at Canterbury, but a broken wrist suffered in a baseball collision ended his high school baseball career. At Brewster, he helped win two national prep championships and became a highly regarded college recruit.

He chose the University of Louisville, where he played for two seasons. Mitchell averaged 7.4 points as a freshman and improved to 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game as a sophomore. He earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2017 before declaring for the NBA draft.

The Denver Nuggets selected Mitchell 13th overall in the 2017 NBA draft and traded him to the Utah Jazz on draft night. He made an immediate impact, scoring 41 points against the New Orleans Pelicans in December 2017, which set a Jazz rookie scoring record at the time. He later became the first rookie guard since Allen Iverson in 1996-97 to record two 40-point games in a season.

Mitchell won the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In his first playoff series, he led Utah past the Oklahoma City Thunder while averaging 28.5 points per game. His 171 points across his first six playoff games ranked among the highest totals by a rookie in NBA history.

He became a three-time All-Star during his five seasons with Utah. In the 2020 playoffs, Mitchell scored 57 points against the Denver Nuggets, the third-highest single-game playoff total in NBA history at the time, and followed it with a 51-point performance in the same series. Utah finished the 2020-21 regular season with the NBA's best record, although the Los Angeles Clippers eliminated the Jazz in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Cavaliers acquired Mitchell from Utah in 2022. In his first season in Cleveland, he scored 71 points, eight rebounds, and 11 assists in an overtime victory over the Chicago Bulls. The performance set a Cavaliers franchise scoring record and made him the seventh player in NBA history to score at least 70 points in a game. He was also the first player to reach that total while recording at least 10 assists.

Mitchell helped Cleveland return to the postseason in 2023, its first playoff appearance since the 2017-18 season and its first without LeBron James since 1997-98. He was named an Eastern Conference All-Star starter and earned All-NBA Second Team honors. In 2024, he scored 50 points in a playoff loss to the Orlando Magic, then scored 39 in Game 7 to send Cleveland to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the first time since 2018.

Cleveland produced the best record in the Eastern Conference in the 2024-25 regular season, and Mitchell became only the third Cavaliers player to make the All-NBA First Team, joining Mark Price and LeBron James. In the 2026 playoffs, he scored 39 points in the second half of a game against the Detroit Pistons, tying the NBA record for points in a playoff half, and helped the Cavaliers reach their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2017-18.
