Al Horford

Horford comes from a prominent basketball family. His father, Tito Horford, played in the NBA for three seasons and competed internationally for several years. His uncle Kelly Horford played college basketball at Florida Atlantic University, and his brother Jon Horford played for Michigan and Florida. Horford wears jersey number 42 in honor of baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson.

In December 2011, Horford married 2003 Miss Universe Amelia Vega in the Dominican Republic. The couple first met in Boston at the 2007 Latin Pride Awards and share a family together. For their wedding, former Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz provided his Rolls-Royce Phantom because local limousines were unavailable.

In September 2024, Horford traveled to the Dominican Republic with the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, becoming the first player from the country to do so. In recognition of his athletic accomplishments and national representation, he was awarded the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella, the highest honor conferred by the Dominican government. Grand Ledge High School inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024 and retired his number 42 jersey in 2025.

Horford moved from the Dominican Republic to Lansing, Michigan, in 2000, attending Grand Ledge High School. He set seven school records, including the career scoring record with 1,239 points, and earned Michigan Class A Player of the Year honors as a senior.

Horford committed to the University of Florida under head coach Billy Donovan, joining a core group that featured Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, and Taurean Green. In the 2005-06 season, Horford helped lead the Gators to the Southeastern Conference title and the program's first NCAA national championship, defeating UCLA in the final.

The starting five returned for the 2006-07 campaign, becoming the first starting unit in college basketball history to repeat as national champions. Horford was named the 2007 SEC Tournament MVP and earned All-American honors while averaging a double-double during NCAA tournament play. Following their second national title victory against Ohio State, Horford and his starting teammates entered the 2007 NBA draft.

The Atlanta Hawks selected Horford with the third overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft. In his debut season, he was the unanimous selection for the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished as runner-up for Rookie of the Year after helping Atlanta push the eventual champion Boston Celtics to seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

Horford developed into an elite two-way frontcourt player during his nine seasons in Atlanta. He earned four All-Star selections with the Hawks, in 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016, and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2011. During the 2014-15 season, Horford was a central piece of a 60-win Hawks team that secured the top seed in the Eastern Conference and made the franchise's first conference finals appearance since relocating to Atlanta.

Horford signed with the Boston Celtics in 2016, earning his fifth All-Star selection in 2018 and making the NBA All-Defensive Second Team while helping Boston reach consecutive Eastern Conference Finals. After subsequent single-season tenures with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Horford was traded back to Boston prior to the 2021-22 season.

In 2022, Horford reached the NBA Finals for the first time after setting a league record with 141 postseason appearances prior to a Finals debut. In Game 1 against the Golden State Warriors, he set an NBA record for the most three-pointers made in a Finals debut with six.

During the 2023-24 season, Horford transitioned into a versatile role, stepping back into the starting lineup during the postseason after an injury to Kristaps Porzingis. In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Cleveland, he became the first player in NBA history to record at least 10 rebounds, 5 three-pointers, 5 assists, and 3 blocks in a single playoff game. Boston went on to defeat the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals, giving Horford his first NBA title in his 186th career playoff game, the most postseason appearances before a championship in NBA history.

In 2025, Horford signed with the Golden State Warriors, continuing his long NBA career as a veteran presence in the frontcourt.

Horford also represented the Dominican Republic men's national basketball team from 2008 to 2012. He helped lead the national team to a bronze medal at the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina, where he earned a selection to the All-Tournament Team.
