Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea has one son, Onyx, whom she welcomed in 2020 with rapper Playboi Carti. In October 2020, she said she was raising her son alone, and in 2024 she described herself as the only parent involved in his upbringing.

Azalea was engaged to Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Nick Young in 2015. They ended their relationship in 2016. She has also said that she has Aboriginal Australian ancestry.

Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly, Azalea grew up in Mullumbimby, New South Wales. Her father, Brendan Kelly, was a painter and comic artist, while her mother, Tanya, cleaned holiday houses and hotels. Azalea began rapping at 14 and formed a short-lived all-girl rap group with two neighbourhood friends before pursuing a solo career.

She dropped out of high school and moved to the United States shortly before her 16th birthday to pursue music. After living in Miami and Houston, she settled in Atlanta, where she worked with Dungeon Family member Backbone and met producers FKi and Natalie Sims. She later moved to Los Angeles. Her stage name combines the name of her childhood dog, Iggy, with Azalea Street, where her family lived in Australia.

Azalea gained online attention through the music videos for "Pu$$y" and "Two Times". She released her first mixtape, Ignorant Art, in 2011, followed by the mixtape TrapGold in 2012, which was produced by Diplo and FKi. In 2012, she became the first female and first non-American rapper to appear on XXL magazine's annual Freshman list. That year she also signed with T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records and released the Glory EP.

Her breakthrough came with The New Classic, released in 2014. The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles "Work," "Bounce," "Change Your Life," "Fancy" and "Black Widow." "Fancy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while her appearance on Ariana Grande's "Problem" reached number two. Azalea consequently became the first act since the Beatles to hold the top two positions on the chart with her first two entries.

After The New Classic, Azalea released the EP Survive the Summer in 2018, followed by the album In My Defense in 2019, the EP Wicked Lips later that year and the album The End of an Era in 2021. Her singles from this period included "Team," "Savior," "Kream," "Sally Walker," "Started" and "Sip It." She announced a hiatus from music after The End of an Era, later resumed musical activity and released the music video for "Money Come" in 2023.

Azalea made her acting debut in Furious 7 in 2015 and served as a judge on the eighth season of The X Factor Australia in 2016. She founded Azalea Street Productions, which signed a deal with NBCUniversal to develop original content. She has also worked as a music-video director and has been recognised with awards including two American Music Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and the 2014 ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist.

Azalea's music combines Australian hip hop, Southern rap, pop rap, electronic music and dance-pop. She developed her style after spending several years in Miami and Atlanta, and she has cited Tupac Shakur, Missy Elliott and Beyoncé as influences. Although Australian, she raps with an American accent shaped by her immersion in Southern hip hop.

Her music videos often use elaborate visual concepts, comedy and references to films such as Clueless, Kill Bill, Showgirls and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Her public image has also included modelling work with Wilhelmina Models, Levi's, House of Holland, Steve Madden and Bonds.
