Personal life

Playboi Carti has two children. He has a son, Onyx, with Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, and revealed the birth of his daughter, Yves, in 2023.

Carti has asthma, which he has described as severe.

Early life and the move from Sir Cartier

Carti grew up in Riverdale, Georgia, after being born in Atlanta. He attended North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs and was interested in basketball before a disagreement with his coach shifted his focus toward music. He sometimes skipped class to record songs or work at H&M, but he eventually graduated from high school.

He began recording in 2011 under the name Sir Cartier and uploaded early tracks to SoundCloud. Around 2013, he adopted the name Playboi Carti. His early musical influences included Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Odd Future, and Atlanta rappers introduced to him by his older brother.

In 2014, Carti joined Awful Records after meeting its producer and rapper Ethereal, whom Carti credited with helping him develop his sound. He moved to New York City at 18 to pursue music and encountered members of ASAP Mob, including ASAP Bari, who introduced him to ASAP Rocky.

Breakthrough with Playboi Carti and Die Lit

Carti gained underground attention in 2015 with the SoundCloud singles "Broke Boi" and "Fetti," the latter featuring Dash and Maxo Kream. He also worked with Atlanta artists including UnoTheActivist, Thouxanbanfauni, Yung Bans, and Lil Yachty, as well as producers MexikoDro and Icytwat.

He signed with ASAP Rocky's AWGE imprint, a joint venture with Interscope Records, in 2016. That year, he appeared on ASAP Mob's Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends and toured with ASAP Ferg and Lil Uzi Vert.

Carti released his self-titled debut mixtape in 2017. It reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles "Magnolia" and "Wokeuplikethis," featuring Lil Uzi Vert. His debut studio album, Die Lit, followed in 2018 and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200.

Whole Lotta Red and Music

Carti released Whole Lotta Red on Christmas Day in 2020. It became his first number-one album on the Billboard 200 and expanded his sound with punk and metal influences, harsher vocal performances, and a vampire-inspired aesthetic. Rolling Stone later included it among the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

His later collaborations included Kanye West's Donda, Travis Scott's "Fein," The Weeknd and Madonna's "Popular," Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign's "Carnival," Future and Metro Boomin's "Type Shit," and Camila Cabello's "I Luv It." "Carnival" became Carti's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100.

Carti released his third studio album, Music, in 2025. The album became his second consecutive number-one record on the Billboard 200, followed by the deluxe edition Music - Sorry 4 Da Wait.

Opium, fashion, and musical style

Carti founded Opium in 2019 as an Atlanta-based record label and rap collective. Its artists have included Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, Homixide Gang, and ASAP Nast, while producers such as KP Beatz, Lil 88, and F1lthy have worked closely with the label's sound. Opium's music and visual identity draw on Atlanta rage rap and punk rock.

Carti's musical style emphasizes atmosphere, mood, flow, and persona over conventional lyricism. His high-pitched "baby voice" appears on songs such as Solange's "Almeda" and Tyler, the Creator's "Earfquake," while his later work introduced a coarse, metal-influenced "deep voice."

Fashion is a major part of Carti's public image. He has modeled for Louis Vuitton, Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5, VFiles, and Drake's OVO Lookbook. He has identified Raf Simons as a favorite designer and has cited Kanye West and ASAP Rocky as fashion influences.

Legal issues

Carti was arrested for domestic battery in 2017. In 2019, he was convicted and fined £800 for assaulting his tour bus driver during an incident in Gretna, Scotland, in 2018.

In 2020, he was arrested in Clayton County, Georgia, on gun and drug-related charges after a traffic stop. He was later charged with expired tags, marijuana possession, and improperly passing an emergency vehicle, and was released on bond. He was also arrested for reckless driving in 2022 after being accused of driving 133 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone.
