Jayden Daniels

Daniels was born in Fontana, California, and grew up in nearby San Bernardino. His father, Javon Daniels, played college football as a cornerback for Washington and Iowa State in the late 1990s. His mother, Regina Jackson, serves as his business manager and certified agent. He has an older sister named Bianca.

He has Japanese heritage through his maternal great-grandmother, who was born in Japan. To honor her, Daniels wears a Japanese flag sticker on his helmet. He became the first starting quarterback in the NFL with Japanese ancestry since Arthur Matsu in 1928. Daniels is Christian and completed a bachelor's degree in business communications at Arizona State in December 2021 before pursuing graduate studies at LSU.

Daniels attended Cajon High School in San Bernardino, where he began playing varsity football as a freshman. He stood out quickly. Over 53 high school games, he set CIF Southern Section records with 210 touchdowns and more than 17,600 total yards. He also sprinted and hurdled for Cajon's track and field team. In 2018, he won the Ken Hubbs Award as the top male high school athlete in the San Bernardino area.

He enrolled at Arizona State University in January 2019 and became the first true freshman quarterback in school history to start opening week. In November 2019, he threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns to upset sixth-ranked Oregon, capped by an 81-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk. Daniels won the Sun Bowl MVP award to finish his freshman season. He led the Pac-12 in completion percentage in 2021 before entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Daniels transferred to Louisiana State University in March 2022 and earned the starting job. In his first season, he produced 28 touchdowns and led the team in rushing yards, helping LSU reach the SEC Championship Game and a 63-7 victory over Purdue in the Citrus Bowl.

His 2023 season set several records. Daniels accounted for 50 total touchdowns, passing for 40 and rushing for 10. Against Florida, he totaled 606 yards of offense and became the only player in FBS history to record at least 350 passing yards and 200 rushing yards in a single game. He finished the year leading the nation with 4,946 total yards and set the FBS single-season passer rating record at 208.0. He won the Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp Award, the Davey O'Brien Award, the Manning Award, and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Washington selected Daniels second overall in the 2024 NFL draft. He secured uniform number 5 after punter Tress Way relinquished it, and he won the starting role before week 1. In his third professional game, he completed 91.3% of his passes against Cincinnati, setting an NFL single-game rookie record. In October, despite playing through a rib injury, Daniels completed a 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to Noah Brown with no time remaining to beat the Chicago Bears 18-15. The throw earned the NFL Moment of the Year award.

Daniels led Washington to a 12-5 regular season and two playoff victories on the road against Tampa Bay and Detroit. He set NFL rookie records for quarterback rushing yards with 891 and regular-season completion percentage at 69%. He threw for 822 yards and five touchdowns in the postseason before Washington fell to Philadelphia in the NFC Championship Game. Daniels won the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award and earned a Pro Bowl selection. Multiple injuries limited him to seven games during the 2025 season.

Daniels blends vertical passing accuracy with open-field agility. Defenders struggle to contain his acceleration on scrambles and option plays. He remains composed in late-game drives, throwing 12 fourth-quarter or overtime touchdowns during his rookie NFL season.

His training relies heavily on technology. At LSU in 2023, Daniels began using virtual reality software designed by Cognilize to simulate defensive reads, stadium environments, and opposing schemes. He brought the routine to Washington. Before games, he warms up using a regulation basketball, a drill learned from childhood friend C. J. Stroud that makes the football feel lighter.
